I know that for drag racing you need like a 1/4 tank for weight savings, and I have heard about 3/4 for autox. Has anyone gone much less, like to a 1/4 of a tank and haven't had their engine be fuel deprived? Has anyone even noticed much time advances because of the loss of fuel weight? Thanks for the help.
Thats a good question Tom. I usualy run with 1/2 tank but i too was wondering about using a 1/4 tank. hopfully someone with more experience will chime in:coolugh:
I try to run 1/4 a tank, if possible. If you are at a test and tune or school, you will run out of fuel. Personally I don't think I have reached the level of driving ability that weight savings in fuel or passengers really impacts my autoxing times. Well maybe if i have four people in my car while autoxing
I know my engine gets fuel starvation when I'm anywhere below a quarter tank and hit a turn really hard, this is just on the street, I've never autoxed it. I'd say go for around half a tank.
wrxfan420's car was running low on gas and would bog due to fuel deprivation on hard cornering... he was running pretty close to E though
yeah, my car has cut off with just under a 1/4 in the tank. i was turning left, real hard, i almost shit myself. i thought i was past redline.
Yeah, when I was too low on gas I definitely lost at least a second because of the car stalling for a second due to starvation. I had about an 1/8 of a tank at that point, maybe a little more. I would not Auto X with less than a 1/4 of a tank. Clemson, are you at the point where weight savings of a few pounds will even help you. I don't know of anyone that is to the point where the only way they can go faster is to shave a few pounds off.
Its not just the weight alone that is a problem, its more the shift in the weight. On every corner I have gas slaming into the side of the gas tank. I thought this could upset the balance of the car. No I am not that spectacular that I need to shave weight, but why carry extra if you don't have to.
Oh, I understand, I just myself don't feel like the amount of gas I have makes any difference unless I am too low and starving my engine like that one time. I will Auto X with a full tank without a second thought. Gas sloshing around in the tank shouldn't really do much for the balance of the car. If anything it could help get the tail to swing around, if you like that style of driving.
I just keep my fuel at 1/2 tank, as I don't want to run out. I also am not at a stage when the extra weight of the fuel would effect my times. I will need a lot more seat time before this will be a big issue for me. -- Brian
