So even tho I know that the 5MT is a pretty loud tranny, especially with a stiffer trans mount, I occasionally get paranoid hearing all the noises my tranny makes at various points when Im driving. Is there any quick tests/checks I can do to ensure that Im not actually destroying anything? Something that can be done with the car on jack stands. I have like 40k on this set of tires, so Im always curious if worn tires are going to start to effect things.
you may also be hearing the diff, they get louder after a while. check your fluids. if there aren't any parts of the tranny in it, you should be in good shape. also: you get 40K on your tires??
Haha yea, Fuzion HRi. Were brand new on the car when I bought it at 34k, currently have 77xxx on the ODO. Can you elaborate on the diffs getting louder? I had the trans and rear diff fluid changed back in May.
oh 77k? i'm at a loss then. i was talking about the first couple years. hopefully one of the more mechanically inclined can help you out.
Well...are you sure its coming from the transmission tunnel and not the engine bay? If you could isolate it would you say it is coming from (A) Engine Bay, (B) Front Cabin, (C) Rear Cabin, (D) Trunk.
diffs will make a high pitch whine noise, and it's usually pretty hard to pin point if it's the center or the rear. Best bet is to drive around with a passenger and have them listen out for it. Also, diffs will whine louder based on speed, so you may not hear it at 30mph, try getting up to highway speeds. At 80mph, our cars are pretty loud...
wouldn't do the run on jackstands deal (kind of like that phrase, "Hey watch this..."), go to one of the listed vendors and get it on a lift.
