How to relieve fuel pressure

Last time I changed the fuel filter, I did it in the morning before the car had been driven. I don't have a free morning to do it, so I think I need to relieve the fuel pressure. The service manual says to unplug the fuel pump relay and start the car. They have a picture of it, but is is so close a shot I can't tell where it is. Can anyone shed some light? Is it near the boost control soleniod?

Is there another way to turn off the fuel pump (fuse, ect.)?

    TIA

There should be a fuse for the fuel pump.

Or, you could just undo a fuel line...that is what I have always done...you are going to get fuel on yourself either way.

Lucky for us bug-eye owners the filter is on the fire wall. You could be safe and just pull the negative off the battery, loosen the hose clamps, and wrap a rag around the fitting before pulling it off. Like Eddie said you'll get gas on you no matter what.

nicad Yes I am a troll

pull the fuel pump controller. it's in the trunk, paseenger side behind the carpet stuff

edit: wagon? I'm assuming it's in the same general vicinity. pull the controller, crank the car until it does and have at it

Thanks. It is a wagon. It is a bit of a PITA to pull all of the trunk pieces to get to it. Thought maybe someon knew of the fuse number or where the relay was. Guess I will look at the service manual a bit more for the fuse - or just pull the line and get a gas shower.

It wont be a shower....Put a rag around it and remove slowly.

Just did this last night on my bugeye. It had been sitting for 3 hours and there was no pressure in the lines.

yep, just loosen the hose clamp, twist fuel line and let it sit for 2hrs and there should be little if any pressure.

Thanks everyone! BTW, it is amazing what you can find reading the FSM. There is a section that shows were all of the sensors, relays, ect. are in the engine section. Probably won't mess with it and use above suggestions.

The service manual is a wealth of information. I always refer there first if I am uncertain about something. At any rate, I would not expect a golden shower when you undo it. I had my car sitting for a few hours before I replaced and did not have a problem.

I did it this weekend when I did the master cylinder brace. Took it off in the morning when it was cool. Just a dribble of gas came out. No problem.
