Yeah, the 02 should be a bugeye. US bugeyes were 02-03. Everywhere else they were 01-02. So, it should still be a bugeye.
I went back and looked at the car again i think i just want some of his jdm interior parts. plus i think once my cars out the shop its gonna look better anyways....
My guess is that it wasnt all pieced together from one donor car. Perhaps it started its life out as an 02, the owner pulled the tranny off a pre-01 car (5speed and 4.44), the interior and exterior off an 04/05, left the stock WRX engine but added a VF23 turbo.
