i am going to buy an sti muffler for my wrx, and i was wondering how hard it would be to get it installed. my car is bone stock, and it has 80K on it. it is a sedan (although i dont think this matters). would you guys recommend changing the gasket, and how many will i need? (i`m guessing i`ll only need one because i am just swapping the muffler part). and if i do need any, how much do they cost, and where can i get them for cheap?

u can get the gaskets at subaru of gwinnett... u would need just one...

there are a bunch of people on here who have upgraded the exhaust on their STi and probably have axle back's sitting around... at one point alex had 3-4 sitting at his place

install will be real easy... 2 bolts if i remember correctly

is it hard to take off the stock muffler off the hanger, and also, do i have to get my ecu reflashed or anything like that? i have never done any internal work on the car, and i am VERY picky to get things to run smooth ( i am sure everyone else is also). haha, i took 4 days researching on making sure to find the best way to take off the emblems without hurting the paint job, and i realized how stupid i was when i actually did the job, it was REALLY easy. so im guessing this time, it is something really easy again, but i just wanna make sure.

stock axleback will be real easy to take off... get some PB blaster to loosen the bolts... hangars shouldnt be an issue either

    no retune required either

aite, thanks. BTW, i AM talking to alex to buy his sti muffler. he offered to install it for me for $30, but i need some learning experience as well, and i also need to buy a new gasket with that $30. i will try to install it myself after i pick up the muffler, and see how it turns out. if things go bad, i know someone will help me out in this forum.

Sure, if you want to install it yourself here's what you'll need.
    • (1) 14mm socket
    • (1) 14mm open wrench
    • (1) 2.5" exhaust gasket
    • (1) Can of WD-40
    • (1) STi Muffler
    • (1) hour of your time
    • (2) 12oz bottles of your beer of choice

Steps to remove and replace your muffler with your new sti can
    1. Drink (1) beverage of your choice (beer)
    2. Slide under the rear of your car and hit the 2 bolts and 3 hangars with some WD-40 (you want a good bit on all of them). This loosens the bolts and the hangars
    3. While you wait on the soakage, drink (1) beverage of your choice (beer...again)
    4. Upon finishing your 2nd beverage of choice, the wd-40 should have worked its jdm magic
    5. Slide up under the car, hit the two bolts with your wrench and ratchet and disconnect them
    6. Pull the muffler out of the 3rd hanger (right where you disconnected the muffler from)
    7. Pull the 2 rear hangers and remove crusty old wrx muffler
    8. Put the 2 rear hangers onto the new sti bling muffler
    9. Put the 3rd hanger on
    10. Reattach the muffler to the intermediate pipe, and dont forget the gasket!
