i know this has been talked about before (way to many times probably) but is there any disadvantages to removing the intake silencer? i cant seem to get a definitive answer on this. ive heard its no big deal, and ive also heard its a good way to get water in the intake. any informed people want to way in?

I would gander to say somewhere btwn 95-100 percent of wrx/sti owners on here take out there intake silencers as first mods. Its recommended that you put some kind of elbow in there to actually utilize the cold air from the snorkus.

Its fine. Plenty of people drive around for years after taking it out and not even putting an elbow in. You'll hear teh turbo and teh bov much bettar. :)

Depends - are you n/a or turbo?

In his profile it says WRX. I doubt he would have removed the turbo.

There is no worry with removing the Intake Silencer on your car. You can run without the Silencer, or you can put in an Elbow.

    That's the default, though ;)

    Shut up, NOOB.

Most people change it if it doesn't apply though. :si:

Im also thinking of removing the silencer, but i read that you should saw off the silencer part and seal the hole up left on the snorkus and put that part back in fitting like an Elbow.

My question is do you have to poke a small hole in the part thats sealing up the hole created from sawing?? I read on one DIY that its good to have a small hole poked in there so it acts as a drain and avoid the chance of sucking up water??? ....Just wanna get this cleared up before i do anything!

I wouldn't recommend this - if you ever want to go back to stock for any reason, those little boxes are kind of a bitch to find.

Yea thats exactly wat i was thinking. I mean i found one...for $60. and its completely not worth the money...but i was wondering, is there anything bad that can happen if i just take the whole thing out and go without that "ram air intake" up top on my engine?

Whatever man, All you need to do is find someone like me, who replaced the stock intake completely, and has parts of it still laying around. I sold the actual Air Box, and have all other parts to the stock intake. It is not nearly as hard to find as you make it seem.

If you decide to cut your stock silencer, and decide one day to return it to stock, finding the needed piece will not be hard.

As for drilling a hole if you decide to cut and close off the Silencer, absolutely. If you do this method, you would definitely want to drill a hole in the underside to allow any moisture to drip out of the intake system.

Ok i see...ok im gonna take it all off...run it and see if there is any problems without and how it sounds. If there is problems im gonna cut it, seal it and just put that box part back in there....

    There's that two.

How do you get rid of something nobody really wants? I am not a big fan of throwing things away, so I still have damn near every stock part that has come off my car so far.

I guess it is just odd to me. When I have a performance oriented car, I enjoy hearing the motor. I don't want it so loud that it gives me a headache like straight pipes, but I do like hearing it :)

It's a cheap free mod to the car that, after reading posts from people who have done it seems to not really cause any harm. just allows for little louder sound from engine...which im down with! lol

I have had mine through minor tsunamis and no issues with water ingestion.

So you would say that nothing bad happens when "ram air" and whole silencer are just all removed???

sweet thread:keke: after i posted i found a pretty good thread on iwsti about this. i think im going to saw the thing off and just leave the hole open, either that or make some kind of half circle cap with the small hole for draining. add a k&N drop in (dry out the oil first) and hopfully it all be worth it... who am i kidding, its always worth it.

heres the link to the iwsti thread:

Hey thanks for that thread man! i needed a good description on it too. But yea im thinking of taking it all off...and if that causes problems im just going to saw off the silencer and cover it up with some fiber glass then poke a hole in it...

Why would you saw off the bottom of the silencer and leave it open? You are accomplishing the same exact thing as just removing it totally.

For the love of god, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT WITH REMOVING THE ENTIRE SILENCER AND LEAVING IT OPEN. It will not cause any harm to your car. All you are doing is removing a large uturn in the path the air is coming in. I have never, NEVER heard of a Silencer Removal causing any problems.

Nothin wrong with making sure man. I ended up reading a bunch on it...and there are some problems that i read people ran into...which i dont want. ....So if it takes a couple times to ask the question and read around in order for me to get the answer i need and make sure, then i will ask. :)

Both of these, unless for some bizarre reason you drive an N/A car.

hey how do you dry out a k&n? I have one but I took it out bc the oil jacked up my mass airflow sensor. what's the oil for anyway?

makes the particles stick. Just air-dry overnight.
