I have been very interested and have decided to try it out. My dilemma is I don’t know what class to run. I have read over the rule book but am a little confused. I was told by others to just ask so... I’m in a 2005 wrx with street tires. Suspension- prodrive springs and front upper strut bar/rear upper strut bar. Engine- Perrin IC hoses/ cat back exhaust with a shorty down pipe and Cobb AP. (not sure if it matters but I still have the cat in the midpipe.) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Kyle
For you first 2 events, you will be running in Novice class, after that, you will need to run in class. My guess with the Mods you listed is that you will run in STX or STU.
The cat in the midpipe definetely matters. Delete this and you're bumped into SM where the cars are much more highly prepped. I agree it looks like you will run STX which is an extremely competitive class. If this is your first experience driving the car in a performance event, the competition thing shouldn't be your main worry though. Heck I have driven in plenty of autocrosses and I am still mainly worried about how I drive, not the competition...
Yes this will be my first event with this car. I’m just looking to have fun and meet new people. You can’t enjoy a car to that extent on the streets so you gotta go some where. Thanks for the reply's!
very good point... also we have a WRXatlanta challenge class with atlanta SCCA... http://www.wrxatlanta.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5530
well, a couple things to note: 1) i suck at driving 2) the times are normalized in an attempt to equalize the difference in modification levels... so someone running in stock class could be slower than someone in street mod and still take first place
If you're just looking to have fun run in the TO (time only) class. My setup sucks for auto-x and would have me running in a higher class just because of the AP and a short-throw shifter. That's bs, I'd be up against cars with wide wheels, springs and sway. Unless you're building your car for auto-x it seems that the classifications are just going to screw you over. Just have fun whatever you do. It's a blast.
I was told on the SCCA forum because of my IC hoses I would be in ESP. I tried looking for any info about this group and found none. Does anyone have any info about this group? Thanks kyle
If your Cobb AP changed your boost, you are in SM. I don't believe any of the STX or STU allows for boost changes. SCCA rules suck. Check out NASA tt, its much better as far as rules go. It gives you points based on mods, and each class has a certain amount of points allowed in it. Clemson is also having an autox this weekend if anyone is interested. We are also near to having a rallyx.
Yes there is but heres what someone over on that forum said. "There's a rumour that even the STX legal accesport map is not exactly legal for STX." Even that being said my IC hoses make me go into the prepared class. (I dont understand that myself)
I don't understand why debadging a car takes it out of Stock. Honestly, it is a local event, and if you are slightly outside your class because of X mod, nobody will car. It's when you are in Nationals and trying to cheat the classes that you will have problems. They don't even check for mods at Tech Inspection, so you have nothing to worry about. Now, if you are consistantly winning in whatever class you run, but are outside the allowed mods for that class, then you may have problems. You can try PMing AutoXer if you want a definitive answer to what class you should run in with your mods. He ran Atlanta Region Solo 2 last year, and would know better than anyone else, what mods are allowed in what class.
It does suck, thats why one mod shouldn't move you out of a class. This is why Nasa is better because it has a points system. Although, .1-infinity psi over stock is still illegal. The AP STX is not legal. If something moves you into street prepared then to street modified, SM takes presidence. Just go with SM, or ESP (easier than SM) nobody will know, and it won't make a huge difference without any major suspension upgrades. I ran in ESP for a while because I had an uppipe with no tuning. So I got ran over for a while, its a humbling experience.
You won't be in a Prepared class. You will be in E Street Prepared. It allows unlimited boost controls on the stock turbo, changes to intake (including the I/C), as well as a host of other suspension, wheel, and tire mods. You can do well locally in ESP even with your curent prep level. Street Prepared is not nearly as far along as Street Modified, which allows engine swaps, turbo swaps, custom suspension pieces, etc. As far as SCCA vs NASA, they both have their highs and lows. Personally I prefer the SCCA classing system, though I realize it's difficult for a rookie to understand. The complete rules are here: http://www.scca.com/Solo/Index.asp?IdS=003CF0-B2C8730&x=050|070&~= There are allowances for a number of small things in the comfort and convienance section of the stock class rules (which are inherited in ST, SP, SM, etc.). Things like adding gauges, tow hitch, etc. are included in that. I think most people get frustrated with SCCA classing because they don't understand it. I'd be happy to answer any questions here or via PM. The NASA points system has it's own flaws; they are just less obvious because competition is not 1/4 of what the SCCA has. Therefore a serious competitor prepares their car for SCCA classing and the loopholes in NASA's system are not exploited. If NASA had the numbers that SCCA events do then the points system wouldn't look nearly as attractive. In the end the serious competitors are going to build to the limits of the class, whether that be by accumulating the maximum number of points in the most beneficial places or by building within a set of allowances.
I agree with you AUTOwrXer. I think the problem is when people mod their cars before realizing they want to autox. Then they have mods that aren't based on a specific class. I always think that if I could start modding over again it would be great, because I could tune to a specific class, or point number depending on what Association I am running with.
Thank you guy's for your help and reply's. It cleared up alot for me. I hope to see some you guy's out there.
