Unless you have reflectors or projectors built for HID use, its not going to work as well as you think unfortunately.

However, if my HID retro-fitting project goes over well, I will see about offering that as a service sometime in the next couple months I hope.

from my research over the past couple years i would only try and go with a mcculluh(sp?) brand kit or something with philips balasts.

  9. Aren't our houseing units support HIDs? Like...if you wanted an STi HID, wouldn't the houseing be the same anyways?

"THIS HID CONVERSION KIT COMES WITH 2 Ballast , 2 HID light bulbs, High Voltage (Bulb) Wires harness for plugging AND brackets for holding the ballasts."

and the seller offers 19 months warranty, and he is 100% positive power seller...

it seems pretty legit with me. i`m gonna give it a try and let you guys know.
i`m not much of a light expert, so all i expect to gain from this $100 hid kit is just better vision for night driving... the silverstars i have are OK, but definitely not as good as HIDs, although they ARE better than stock ones.

What moose and I are trying to say is that it isnt what he's offering that's the problem, its what you are missing.

The reason why the STi has HIDs and they work is that it has a special reflector to properly aim and project the light produced. Allow me to put it this way: When you shoot a rifle, the barrel acts as a means to propel the bullet in a well-aimed, forward direction. The point from which the bullet leaves the slide (or w/e its called) and the point from which the bullet leaves the barrel have not changed in direction or anything of the nature. This is how the reflected light from a proper HID housing / reflector / projector essentially works. However, simply putting the bulbs in there (powered by the ballast) is like firing grape shout out of a shotgun. There's nothing to keep the light in a nice projected arc, instead it just blows up in the housing and goes all over the place.

    I certainly hope that helps.

i see that it will have some kind of a weird pattern, so my question is, will this HID kit still be better for vision if i am willing to put myself into a danger of blinding others on the road? cuz i`m guessing the HID light aimed wrong still has better vision over the halogens..

if i want just the HID looks i kno i could have bought blue-tinted bulbs, but they are worse than stockers as far as the performance goes.

i know i sound very ignorant and immature to blind everyone on the road, but if it is not gonna be a terrible blinding, i would risk going thru the trouble and doing this mod on my wrx... I just have REALLY bad vision at night. being near-sided sux.. as some of you know, i was involved in a light-pole hitting accident about a week ago, and it is because of my poor vision...only if i was to see the pole earlier....

and i am still not convinced that doing this mod would actually hinder the vision..

so even a kit well-known as the McCulloch Kit would be bad, because the WRX projectors are just not made for the HIDs? (and i dont think the M kit provides different housing or anything.. plug and play right?)

so i am coming to a conclusion that this kit i found on ebay is almost identical to the McCUlloch kit, except it doesnt come with both-sided tapes and some zip-wire thing to hold the wires together. other than that, it is cheap, looks very easy to do.

however, i know things can go terribly wrong at all times with messing with lightings, so if anyone has a VERY good reason why i shouldnt do this, PLEASE feel free to stop me!

Are there any kits that just insert into the factory housings? I mean you already have good quality housings that are aimed correctly...couldn't you use them and just replace the bulbs with hid bulbs?

i dont think it is the actual aiming of the housing.. it's just that on the cars with HID intended, they have projectors and it shoots a ray of HID light, whereas on our cars, the rich light will be reflected off the housing and blind everyone on the road...

HOWEVER, after hours of researching around the web, i found out that many people had successful results from lowering the aim just on the driver side and leaving the passenger side alone so that you dont blind other drivers and you still have better visibility over the stockers. Just to be safe, i would buy the McCulloch Kit because it is well known and everyone used it for the bugeye, i dont have that much money, so i am gonna see if this kit from ebay will serve me right.

I really don't understand why these ballasts and such are so freaking expensive...I have 500 watts of metal halide lighting on my salt reef tank and I paid around $300....for 500 watts!! These are what like 55 watts? Blah blah hid, but seriously, my tank lights will literally blind if you look at them too long and have a nice blue glow to them. Seems like if you stamp performance or HID on something they really jack the price up. There is no reason there should not be some cheaper options out there. The electronics are the same...ya need a ballast and a bulb.

Without special reflectors or a projector you will blind people.....it is also NOT street legal to run aftermarket HID solutions. The only way to get HID in a working solution is by retrofitting projectors or using STI hid headlamps.

OK, I will make one last attempt.

Please read this, which addresses the 'better visibility' thing:
If you have read the entire Stern article and still insist on sticking some bulbs into your factory housing to get hidzzzzz, then I daresay you were not looking for advice but rather validation of a decision you've already made.

The only way to properly fit HIDs into your WRX is either buy the STi HID headlamp assembly or fit a projector into there...neither are cheap but both are the correct way to approach the problem. The real deal always costs the most, but its the safest and most affective.

thanks for the kind advice. i am finally out of the nonsense i was trying to fit on my car. i will do the HIDs later down the road if i have REAL money to play with.

so ALEX, please sell me your exhuast quick because i keep thinking of other options haha.. i know with around 110 bucks, Sti muffler will be the best and easiest mod to do without any harm to others (blinding people with the sti muffler? i dont think so..haha) thanks guys for pulling me out of this one.
