For the past few weeks, my car has experienced an issue where it feels like I'm either hitting boost/fuel cut or it's misfiring right at ~6500 rpms. Cheapest and easiest thing to do was replace the spark plugs as I currently had ~4k miles on a set of NGK (#7) coppers. I was advised to gap them at ~0.030" which falls under the stock range. I did this on Saturday and still have this issue. Ok, well maybe I have a ignition coil going bad so a friend let me borrowed a set off his dad's WRX as his is currently down. I replaced all four tonight, no luck. I did a few data logs tonight but because Cobb doesn't appreciate Mac's, I will have to wait until the morning to upload them at work for all to see. I also had my gf record the action so you can see what I'm seeing. YouTube is telling me that they are in "read-only" mode therefore the video won't be live until this is done. No changes have been made to the car recently that I could point a finger to to blame it on. Fuel pump has less than ~5k miles on it but wouldn't surprise me if it's already crapping out on me. For shits and giggles and because I have yet to create a journal on here, I have listed what mods I currently have on the car. - Built EJ257 block (100mm JE pistons, Manley rods & ACL race bearings) - Stock 2.0 heads - Perrin Big Maf - APS 3" Turbo Inlet - Deadbolt SZ55 turbo (IWG) - Tial BOV - Perrin EL headers - Perrin Up-Pipe - BPM Divorce wastegated downpipe (catless) - Greddy Ti-Exhaust (catless) - PE800 Top Feed Injectors - Walboro 255lph fuel pump - TGV deletes - TurboXS FMIC Until I am able to upload the video and data logs, what would you guys guess the issue be? Thanks for the help, Steve
I believe it will pop a CEL or flash cruise if you hit the boost cut, at least it always did with mine. Its difficult to say without looking at the logs, as I am sure anyone else will agree with. However, you may as well start with the standard problems -- have you checked for t3h leaky boost? There could be a small leak somewhere that's only showing itself at a higher PSI.
I forgot to mention that I have done both a compression check and leakdown test and both came out good. Compression check was just for the heck of it, not for this issue I'm having now.
Car was tuning via the Cobb AP. No launch control has been set. I also double checked that tonight as well.
Well I finally figured it out. I have two things going on, 1) the coupling connecting the IC pipe to th intercooler has a good size tear in it. Very noticeable once I hooked the smoke machine to the IC going from the turbo to the IC. A new coupling will be ordered tomorrow. 2) the inlet tube coupling that connects to the turbo has a hole in it. I believe this was caused from it rubbing against the TGV housing area so I need to find a resolution to this as well.
Haha...I know, I know. I hope to go rotated this summer. Been researching my options. I think I want something close to a 3076 with the power goal of ~450whp. That should be enough power for the time being.
If it happens constantly at 6500rpms then I doubt its the boost leak thats causing it. If it happens but does so at different RPMs then maybe its from the boost leak. Most likely you have a sensor failing.. check your cam position sensor thats on the driver side head. Its possible its dirty and not picking up a clean signal, loose, or has a bad connection. From there check your grounds, crank positions sensor, and coil packs.
This past Sunday I did a full visual inspection as well as a smoke test of the intake and intercooler setup to see if there was any noticeable leaks and sure enough, the coupler holding the IC pipe to the FMIC had a good size tear in it. I ordered two new couplers (one for each side of the intercooler) that had humps in it to allow for any necessary flexing. I installed them during my lunch break and bam, my issue is now resolved and the car pulls much better than before. It actually has power now. lol. Below is a picture of the coupler for everyone to see. Thanks to both Mike and Brian for calling me and giving me hints on where to look for. :wiggle:
