i have a 2001 Impreza with the full V6 STi Type RA conversion. everything possible was swapped over. the engine recieved a recent rebuild due to some oil starvation and bearing failure......plus a crap ton of miles on the block from original japanese owner. i am looking to upgrade the turbo and am at a loss as to which route to take.

    motor as it sits today:
    EJ207 with VF28 (running about 21psi)
    JE pistons
    Manley rods
    ACL bearings
    heads heat treated and ported
    Fujitsubo headers with up-pipe
    Helix V3 downpipe
    ebay FMIC
    APS dual vent bov
    Apexi suction filter
    MonsterSport lightwieght flywheel
    APS side feed fuel rails
    Sard 800cc injectors
    Sard FPR
    ProcessWest oil cooler kit
controlled by Apexi PowerFC tuned by Doug@TopSpeed

pretty sure the little VF28 is on its last leg and want to replace it before it blows. its already close to its limit and i am wanting more. the motor put out about 311whp at the last tune. i am not really looking for gobs of power, but do want some......would like to have some untapped power as well so i know i am not pushing the motor to its limit either (really dont want to kill another one). after putting on the fmic i did notice a little extra turbo lag, maybe a few hundred rpms at most though. so still hitting good boost before 4000rpms.

    plans for the car:
continue its daily driver habits, so streetability is a must. it will also be used for weekend track events. mostly HPDEs. it was already quite fast before the engine rebuild and is pretty darn fast now, but like i said i want a bit more. the motor being the V6 leaves little for turbo inlet options. dont trust ebay for those and roger clark wants about 400bucks for a hybrid 3in samco one. so i am stuck with either stock inlet or rc samco unit or custom fabbed one to fit or a rotated mount turbo setup (as for as i know of).

the motor is prepped and both the fuel and oil systems have been upgraded to handle track days....plus proper defi gauges to keep me better informed of operating temps/pressures and what not.

side not: one evening when playing around on highway at 3am. was testing out acceleration when the CEL started to flash when i got above 6000rpms and close to 21psi. being a JDM motor and no OBD2 i am not sure if i can read the codes to find out what was going on. any clues?

    thanks in advance.

You can read OBDII codes on a laptop but the code may not have a US translation.

You might be happy with something along the lines of a PE 1820 or deadbolt reworked VF22, they're both basically the same turbo. It should flow a lot more on the topend without too much loss of response down low. I'm sure anything will feel laggy compared to that VF28 though.

If you're wanting more, AndrewPs car felt really good with a Dom3.0 on his 207. It just kept pulling harder and harder all the way to redline but it was a very laggy setup.
