:bigthumb: :bigthumb: We just had a primary election. In 3 Georgia counties, there was a Fairtax refferendum. Gwinnett County: Total Votes: 35,755 Yes - 31,068. 86.9% No - 4,687 13.1% Cobb County: Total votes: 39,458 Yes - 33,598. 85.15% No - 5,860. 14.85% Fayette County: Total votes: 11,517 Yes - 9,828. 85.33% No - 1,689. 14.67%
Well that's pretty cool. I guess enough fair tax supporters showed up during a low turnout election to boost those percentages.
I think this means pretty much nothing. An individual county can't switch to the fairtax. The county can't decide that you're not going to pay state or federal tax. It likely just means that the county officially supports the plan. Edit: the next step would probably be to get enough votes on it to switch the state to not collecting a state income tax any more. After that, federal. Don't hold your breath!
well all a referendum does is send a bill to the legislature through a popular vote where 3/4th percentage is needed...so it's still up to the legislature to determine if it becomes law.
but it is EXTREMELY bad form for a legislature to not respond to the ref. that would be like the Elector of a state not casting their votes for who the state populus voted for in a presidential election. While technically possible, it would be scandalous.
On the Cobb Rebublican Party ballot there was no impowering verbage to the Fair Tax or SPLOST items. They were "Do you believe that ...." questions, which means that at least in Cobb it was a survey.
