I know a lot of users do the wire taps
I personally think thats a terrible way to go especially the taps are made for the wrong gauge wires.

If the taps are too small it actually severes the wires and if its too large the connection is bad and intermittent.

If im goin to tap i would
Cut the wire, expose the bare wires and solder it in place and shrink wrap it

i have mine tap with the female disconnect type, and it works fine. i however do not care for the side by side taps. just get a meter and find 12v and a ground. the radar detector does not pull enough amps to blow the fuse going to the lights, just a little info for you. I have been running like that for over a year and have had no trouble.
