I'm on my way to work this morning when I shift into second gear after leaving a red light and all of a sudden it sounds like a jackhammer is going off. Granted, it's obviously not that loud, but it sounds like a jackhammer. The noise goes away when I push the clutch in. Also, if sitting at idle in neutral, there is a faint tapping that goes away if I press the clutch in. Some friends suggested that it could be the throwout bearing, but this noise isn't present in any other gear, which makes me think that a tooth could have broken off in second gear. I have an 02 with just over 150k miles, so I'm afraid of the worst. What do you guys think?
do a fluid change, I usually line the drain pan with an old t-shirt to catch whatever trash may come out of the trans. It will be obvious if a trans failure. I'd use another mode of transportation till you can do this or have it looked at by an Allpro
sounds like a tooth, only one way to be sure. do as breel says. could also be front diff. any bits of tranny bouncing around in there will make noise....
I drained the tranny fluid the Tuesday night and a little piece of second was hanging out by the drain hole. Looks like it's time for me to start looking for a transmission. What years will actually bolt right up to an '02?
