I know our MT5 calls for GL-5 but thats not specific enough because ive been reading about grinding and all. I went to AutoZone looking for a simple off the shelf fluid with a know brand like castrol or valvoline 75w-90 but didnt find any and i got the DuraBlend 80W-90 - Valvoline. Majority from search says its ok but not enough Long term users have chimed in with 100%. I dont like the cocktail because i dont know if the mix will really mix and what are the effects. Besides REdline is hard to find. And i didnt find the Castrol Hypox-C 75W-90. im not sure where i had a quart of the Castrol 80W-90 from in my garage. Im getting ready to change it today and still debating on the Durablend 80W-90. http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products/product_detail.asp?product=2 MAybe Ill bite the bullet and add one quart of PennZoil Syncromesh into it http://www.pennzoil.com/products/gear_oil/syncro_fluid.html I am concerned of grinding and the syncros
Do the cocktail you wont regret it. Plus, Uncle Scotty did a lot of research before he made his cocktail. It will be fine. You can get redline at the summit racing warehouse in McDonough. I know that's a little ways from you, but if you plan on going to nopi you can pick it up then, or I could bring some for you if you'd like.
it may be good to make a cocktail, im just not true believer of it. How much research did he do ? Did anyone do an oil analysis and compare ? If there is one I like to see it. What you feel not necessary whats happening to the gears. Heres something you may want to ponder about mixing oil http://bobistheoilguy.com/images/lucas/lucas.htm
I'll talk to Scotty sometime this week, so I'll ask him for more details, and then I'll pass it on to you here.
Seen a lot of happy people after the cocktail. As soon as I get around to finding all the ingredients I will be doing it.
Take a gallon jug to your dealership and buy the OEM stuff from them. This is what I found to be the best.
Anyone knows where i can get a TORX T70 bit My tranny has this drain bolt that requires a T70 Anyone have one i can borrow till i get one or knows where i can get one locally
I just did the cocktail mix (I couldn't find Hypoy C so I used regular 75w90). This is by far the best thing my trans has felt. I can now shift into 4th without double clutching. I would steer away from synthetics. I used redline 90NS, Royal Purple, and even Neo Synthetic and none of them were any good in the WRX trans. Every one of them started to grind going into 4th after a few thousand miles. The cocktail feels very smooth (probably smoother than new) but if not just as good as the OEM stuff. I would either go with OEM or the Cocktail just my .02
I ve heard that the OEM is Valvoline 75-90 I certainly like to know how the oil hold up after 5k miles Uncle Scooty says to change it at 20k - that seems to be fairly quick BTW you can get HypoyC 80-90 at pepboys
Got a local tranny guru friend I got back in touch with lately. He says 20k at the most. If driven hard go at 15k. He has been building race trannies for about 15 years now as well as fleet trannies, work truck trannies, etc. I trust him a he has no benifit in telling me to change it out...I do most of my own work!
you can get the cocktail stuff at Mustangs Unlimited on breckenridge, right near DM...that's where I got mine...hasn't done me wrong yet...I've had it for like 10k miles now...even SS commented on how smooth it shifted....
Talking with scotty right now, and he said all your issues with the cocktail are non-issues. He said if you haven't read this thread, then do so. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=920674
Pardon my ignorance, but I want to change my trans fluid and I'm not 100% clear. If I want to change my own fluid, I need to buy transmission fluid and then buy an additive to put in it? Or is the cocktail all you put in? Is there a thread somewhere that explains all of this or a sticky somewhere? Could this fix a little grind when going into 5th gear?
The cocktal is just a mix of a couple different brands of fluid. All you need is the fluid. Addatives with clutch tends to be a no no and many have been found to cause slippage.
