I know a lot of you guys are running this tire. How does it do in the winter time? It says its a max performance summer tire, so how much of a difference is it vs a max performance all season tire?
Itll be fine for Ga/southeast winters. Not many days cold enough down here in the SE to not run a Summer only.
wouldn't worry about it down here. I love mine. not looking forward to replacing the rears. 285s are pricey
Sweet. That's good to know. I know a lot of people on here like them, since every thread created about tires ends up with 15 people saying to use them.lol They are only going to run me about $150 something per tire. Since I'm on the stock WRX wheels. Can I go any bigger than 215/45/17 without having to stretch the tire?
Going bigger then that would cause a ballooning affect, not a stretch. For a handleing car ill take any measure of stretch over any measure of balloon. Going with a wider tire then the wheel is supposed to handle adds excess mush to the steering/less communication, excess weight at the worst possible point of rotating mass, extra cost, and the only real performance benefit you actually gain is better straight line braking and drag launches. Drag car? Go wider. Interested in handling and steering feedback? Stick with an OEM width or real real close to it. That being said, a 225/45/17 tire probably one of the most popular performance tire sizes ever made, so it is possible that some 225/45/17's may be real close to being as cheap as their less popular 215/45/17 kin. So something to chew on. I would feel confident in drawing a general assumption that the wider you go from 215, the less communicative, responsive, and the less lateral G you would be able to hold.
