how can i get more top-end and throttle responce? my mods so far: sti uppipe helix dp stock midpipe (perhaps more power to open up here, and now i dont care about being so loud, i might get a catback) sti axle-back accessport running stage 2. perhaps a tune from scott after getting a proper catback (thinking about hi-power) will make it better but i`m looking for a permanent solution, be it port & polish, or any other type of engine work. i tried to search on nasioc but you know how that goes...
wouldnt a bigger turbo cause more lag? i want more responce... flywheel and pulley out of question though because of its drawbacks.

My bone stock STI(with the crap factory tune) has better response than my tuned 04 WRX had and the 04 WRX had similar power to the STI(230whp and 245wtq on TS's dyno, so it was down about 15whp and wtq to a STI). I had the STI uppipe, Stromung divorced wastegate 3" shorty DP, stock midpipe and resonator and a Stromung axle-back. The 2.5L motor is the way you will end up going eventually. Start saving now... Very old but still true saying, "There is no replacement for displacement."
There are a few tweaks you could try if you have some skills or know someone who does. TGV deletes and phenolic spacers. Cobb boost controller(for when you get a tune which is mandatory), external waste gate or Forge waste gate with higher spring rate. If you do a turbo maybe a quick spooling turbo like a big 16g and the mods above. Meth..... Anything more than that and you might as well save your money and get a used Sti or Evo unless you are doing a full drive train swap which will cost as much once all is said and done. The WRX from my experience (I can only speak for the 02) is quite fragile once you start modding it especially the 2.0 5sp, shit starts to break left and right the 02 is no exception. The 02 or what it was lacking is the whole reason they upgraded the WRX in 04: brakes, tranny (thicker gears although it didn't help much) and the open deck 2.5 etc. If you don't have deep pockets I would just get a Siegel tune stop there and enjoy it for what it is. Save your money for something that is appropriately manufactured for horsepower and then take that and get sick with it.
Welcome to the darkside. Don't knock the lag of a bigger turbo till you drive one for a couple of days, once you get used to it, you will probably find it easier to drive.
honestly, i dont want big power.. i just want something like, eh, responce of the miata's throttle input, pick-up like a VW gti (not a big power, but just quick delivery from low-inertia turbo) and the never-ending top end feel like a vtec engine? hence why i decided to stop spending money on my wrx and just save up for a 997 haha. because along with that kind of an engine, i want delicate steering, powerful brakes, and a nice interior.
you have to be careful just "porting" random things on the car. it may not give you the characteristics you are looking for
With the parts I mentioned on a couple cars I have worked on I was able to reduce spool by a couple hundred RPM's and increase top end slightly
I match ported and blended (smoothed) everything on the intake and exhaust on an otherwise stock 2.0L. A few people can vouch on what a difference that can make. One in particular has a VF34 and STI topmount

Honestly before you spend a bunch on the cryo system, do some reading...there have been some experiments on these showing that when nitrous is used the gain is from small amounts of nitrous getting into the intake and power was increased...when co2 was used the opposite results from co2 getting into the intake. I don't have any first hand experience with them, but that is what I have read. My best advice is read up on them and make your own decision.
Honestly, a good tune will improve throttle response, lag, torque, AND top-end. I have always been skeptical of the porting on a sub-400whp Subaru. If anybody has any back-to-back testing (even a link to someone else's) that really shows gains from it, I'd like to see it... Siegel
are you talking about CO2 leaking into the manifold? because what breel is referring to is using CO2 (and it's adiabatic cooling properties when depressurized) on the intercooler
Ya, I know exactly what he is talking about...do a little research on it. They said that when the co2 or nitrous was sprayed across the intercooler they saw on the nitrous some gains and a change in the o2 readings...higher o2 and a corresponding gain in hp. On the co2 they saw the opposite with a corresponding loss in hp. The people doing the testing surmised that there was some co2 or nitrous leaked into the intake through the filter box. BWT I don't guess you have any clue where those cam caps are do you. Seems each individual one is matched to the head and it is not something you can buy from Subaru...so it would seem unless I can find some with the exact same match on the cam caps, the heads I bought from ya are worthless as heads...but then you probably knew that already. But I am sure I can part them out...springs, etc.
I know for a fact that I have seen cars with the cryo sprayers use n20 in them and it is clearly getting sucked into the intake, I would imagine the same thing happens when you use C02.
I guess at that point just do a 25 or 50 shot of nitrous :ddirty: Then you at least get the FULL benefits of the nitrous instead of just some of them, lol.
I figured you were referring to some sort of manifold leak. strange it would happen, especially under boost and manifold pressure > atmospheric pressure. as soon as the CO2/N2O is sprayed it's effectively at atmospheric pressure and would have a hard time overcoming manifold pressure. I'm sure it could happen, the engineer in me just seems kind of skeptical as for the heads: align bore. or call up axis/raw. ron has a lot of cam caps around he said he would basically let me have
I think we are discussing two different intakes, lol. It is not going in through the intake manifold...it is going in through the actual intake..where the filter resides. It is more prevalent in short ram cars, but the people that tested it said they saw it even happen on stock box cars.
