Well on the way to AMS for Rallycross some jackass pulled out in front of me while I was in 3rd gear. I slammed on the brakes and when I went to get in the gas again to pass this moron my transmission went KaBoom So now there is metal rattling Inside my tranny, and I have no third gear. Am I better off finding a new 5 speed and swapping it or should I try to fix my third gear? What is more cost effective?
depends on how much damage is done, I've seen some failures ruin the case halves. find a 09+ WRX 5spd if not wanting to pay for a 6spd swap
Just depends on your goals/wants. Some will tell you 6speed is the only way to go, some have rebuilt the 5spd with PPG gears and never looked back, others will tell you just rebuilding the tranny every time it blows is better (and these people are crazy). Just make sure if you rebuild to have someone who knows what they're doing do it. There are tolerances that must be maintained inside the case. Otherwise it will eat itself again
Well I managed to baby it back to Marietta...what a scary ride. Even with my loud exhaust I could hear metal rattling around the whole way back. I planned on going 6spd swap eventually as my goals are 400+ HP, but I really wasn't hoping to have to shell out the cash for it right now.
Drain it asap and get all of the shavings out. you may be able to drive it awhile without 3rd gear if you get all of the metal out. I drove on a broken 2nd gear for a couple of weeks without cleaning it out before it finally gave up on me.
the joys of a honda. 3rd gear hasn't worked in my integra for 50k miles. then again its the synchros and not the teeth themselves
Well I've made up my decision....6 SPEED STI SWAP!!!! Spent the last few days going over all of the options in my head and I cant justify repairing my trans or buying another used 5-spd for it to go out in another 6 months or something. Even though it's costing an arm and a leg I still cant wait to drive my new and improved WRX with 6-Speed and DCCD. Brandon from All-Pro is searching for a donor car now...hopefully I'll be back on the road in a few weeks. Thanks for the info guys
