I am getting a job in the near future, so I was thinking about some mods for my car. My car is essentially stock right now except for the TEINs. If I were to get a VF34, what would the supporting mods be? Injectors and STI TMIC? Would I need engine management? Should I get a DP/UP before getting a turbo upgrade? What kind of gains would I be looking at with the VF34 vs. simply getting a new DP/UP?

Well I can't do all of the mods at once. So which of the above would I need first?

I would go with upgrading the fuel system to support the turbo first if you already have a turbo back exhaust. fuel pump and injectors. Then I would up grade the turbo and intercooler and get sometype of engine management then.

from your list of mods in your sig i would get an uppipe and a downpipe first then get a bigger intercooler...then get fuel pump then injectors and turbo done at the same time as getting engine management

I would have to disagree with this. You don't want to slap bigger injectors on without engine management.

    Here's what I'd do..

    1) Get DP and UP (you can do this at the same time you do the turbo, but not after!)
    2) Pick up a used Cobb AccessPort (can also be done at the time of turbo)
    3) Get VF34, injectors, optionally fuel pump
    4) Would not bother with the STi intercooler since these days you can usually find a better top mount for almost as cheap. VF34 will run fine on the stock topmount, but if you get a bigger one and tune for it you can pick up some decent power.

If you think about it the bigger injectors are NOT going to pump more fuel than stock yet because of the ECU and the stock fuel pump! You really don't optimise the injectors until EM has been done along with fuel pump. Right!

    Uh, wrong.

You might want to read up on that. :)

i will have to agree with moose... if u upgrade the injectors and dont tune, the car will run like crap... its good enough to drive up to your tuner but u need to keep it out of boost

You could do minor fuel upgrades like the fuel pump or parallel fuel rail mod (free mod) before the tune. Just keep an eye out for some stuff on sale that you will need and pick up used stuff and you can go far on a budget.

Yeah, I was looking at some prices, and it looks like it would take all summer to save up for the UP/DP and exhaust. I guess I'll have to figure out everything.

How hard is it to remove the up pipe from the car? I don't have experience working with cars, so I don't know that I trust myself doing work on it.

I'm going to be installing an EGT probe soon (defis are in the mail), I guess I would be saving myself some trouble if I installed an UP as long as the manifold is being taken out and drilled.

i have done that install 3 times and it can become a pain, because you have to drop the down pipe to get to the studs under the turbo for the uppipe. Then you drop the manifold and depending on the room you have you may have to go through the wheel well after taking your tire off to get to the bolt on that side of the upipe. it can be a pain, plus don't forget about all that bullshit heat shielding that might be welded on due to heat. Took me 2 -4 hours each time due to how bad the heat sheilding and bolts were rusted and torqued on by heat.
