Just got back from a little road trip and I goto start the car up yesterday and am hearing the following whine. It appears to be coming from the alternator, pulley, etc.... area Any ideas??/ Ignore the video car: 2005 STI / 73K miles http://s5.photobucket.com/albums/y179/kjw6/?action=view¤t=IMG_0713.mp4
Have you done a timing belt service? If so, did you replace all of the idler pulleys? If not, I would take the cover off and see if you can find the noice behind the cover somewhere. Also, taking off one belt at a time could help you diagnose if it is coming from one of the acc. belts.
Yeah, you dont want one of those pulleys to lock up on you and throw the timing belt off. ANDY@killshot or any of the other forum sponsors can probably help you out.
Could also be the ac belt tensioner. I had one go out on me and nearly took out the timing cover in the process. Try squirting it with wd40 and if it quiets up, replace it! The wd will not make it better and it will eventually seize. Napa has replacements pretty cheap.
i sprayed down the ac belt tensioner. No Dice. Still there. I may break down and take it to the stealership , blah.
my ac pump tensioner bearing was going out and was making the same kinda noise. I replaced mine with a all metal pulley from rockauto and no more noise (stupid oe plastic)
do the STis have that little plastic eyelet that holds the tensioner pulley for the alternator? I had a similar noise and mine was broken and ended up wearing the pulley on the bracket that holds it. It was prob checked when the belts were put on, just a thought a though.
