Hey I am new! I just bought an 07 WRX and so far I have put 1000 miles on it. What I was wanting to know is when I can switch the oil out for something like Mobil 1 synthetic. I am not sure what the initial oil is. The salesman said it was there own "Subaru oil." Which I am wondering if it was just some other oil company's oil that bid the lowest that day Subaru happen to be buying oil. The other thing that throws me is some say that you should run a non-synthetic for the first 3000 miles and then switch. Some say you can switch before that but you shorten your break period?

I am just puzzled and want some facts on the situation. Any advice....?

dino oil is what they come with. subaru fluids are usually high quality. get your oil changed now (or real soon to now) to flush out all the shavings and crappola that new engines have. you should be able to go synthetic from now on.

not sure about the "shortened break-in" period. if you leave it dino for another 2k, it's certainly not going to hurt.

oh, and welcome aboard, enjoy your stay and such ;)

You can change it whenever you want. Your break in period isn't really dictated by anything IMO. Break in has been debated to death for decades though and people will keep on doing it going from one extreme to the other.

I say wait until your 3,000 mile oil change at least, because then you're getting the most out of the OE oil which is pretty good stuff. And because synthetic oil isn't cheap. Sure you're happy to slap it in there now but it adds up over time.

Personally I changed it to synthetic at 6,000 miles and never looked back meaning that I have no problem with paying the extra money for my baby.

i've used synthetic since day one, although i did buy the car with 50,xxx miles on it. At around 75,xxx i went from using 5w30 fully synthetic Mobil 1 to using 10w30 fully synthetic Mobil 1.

I changed to synth at 1,000 miles. I'm gonna be doing another oil change soon I think.

hmmm, im in the same position as you gryphon, i got around 750 miles and idk if i want to switch to syn

^^ It should already be magnetic.

I switched mine at 1500 miles to Mobil1 synth.

  9. I change it first at 1k then every 3k thereafter. Usu. wait a couple of oil changes and then go with synthetic afterwards. As far as the break-in period to me it would make sense that synthetic would require a longer time since it is slipperier( not 50 cent word)

wait...so oem is magnetic? would it make sense to go with an aftermarket stronger magnet...or are they any stronger?

Why do you need such a strong magnetic plug? I think there are ppl here running with 300+hp without messing with that?

Well input is the mother of all... things. Lol. Sorry. I'm just a little crazy because I'm stuck in the stinking Denver airport for the next 4 hours.
