Just a FYI... I went to get my emissions done yesterday and not only got the obd2 test but the attendant also hit me with a sniffer test. He said the state requires them to perform random tests on vehicles. He also said every car he tested yesterday has been flagged for a random test. Now I know there won’t be any problem with our fine community but just an fyi.:sx: If this is in the wrong spot please feel free to move. I didnt know where to post it.
Yeah they did the sniffer test in me today as well. They rev the engine to 2500 for 30 seconds and check levels. Removable cats FTW
yup..Same thing happened to me over the weekend. Sniffer test and no roller there. Been going there for 6 years and this is the first time. The guy said the same thing. State is requiring "additional testing" on "random cars". Gwinnett County.
That is what they did. Held at 2000 rpms For what its worth Cobb stage 2 only third cat still passed.
Same thing occurred at the dealer where I work.Machine called for 2 stage test (sniffer) after the obd test. And until yesterday I have not heard of the machine asking for that test for the last year.
I think it's more the Feds than anything, and it's been done to my car the past two years. Don't really see the reason for alarm over this though.
ok. cobb turbo back with one high flow cat running e85, should i expect trouble? btw, i've wanted to see what an e85 car would produce via a sniffer, but not at the cost of a failed test.
Oh man, I better go get tested before I run into trouble with emissions. Thanks for the heads up everyone. I'm in CrAcworth.
FWIW, I recall seeing this thread and being worried about a couple of my other vehicles (I didn't have a Subaru at the moment). I went to have the test done, and no sniffer was used. I was amused enough to mention to the test guy that "I heard a rumor that there are plans to start using 'the sniffer test' in conjunction with the regular OBDII scanner." His response was that the state occasionally has them do both to see if tailpipe outputs actually coincide with the supposed accuracy of what the ECU says is okay. Even if the readings were different and you technically failed the sniffer test, I don't know if they would actually have denied registration on the vehicle. It sounded like it was a sort of random audit of the system as a whole just to verify whether good is actually being done. (Does what I just wrote make any sense?) Once again, that is all hearsay, but I can affirm that here in Fulton I was told that they did some of that, but it was not and is not normal procedure. A sniffer was not used on either of my other vehicles (a 96 GMC 5.7 and a 97 Volvo 850R).
I hear a lot of people around here say that no one ever does a visual on their vehicle. I must look seedy, as EVERY inspector who has looked at any of my cars has done a visual. One almost failed my old WRX because he couldn't immediately find a working cat. I had to point out the heat wrapped cat on my aftermarket downpipe before he would let me pass visual. On the bright side, he didn't seem to notice or care that my cat was aftermarket.
had mine done in august. im in cobb. e85, evoIII16g, cobb single high flow cat tbe. pde up, id1000s turboXS top mount, grimmspeed ebc, self tuned. cobb ap2. i asked about the sniffer. apparently its a random thing. somehow some vehicles are flagged. mine was not. and i passed odbc scan only. at the end i asked the guy about the sniffer test and told him i was curious about how my setup with 'sniff'. so he ran the test in some sort of 'zombie' mode so that my vehicle wasnt tied to the test. i passed but barely. was interesting because i have an ODBCII extender which is great because it moves the dongle connection away from my knees to anywhere in the car i want to mount a laptop and i had to explain to the guys where my dongle had moved to.
