http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm I know all about the page above. Should I do what is mentioned on the page first, then change oil, drive it again/check for leaks and then Drive it like i stole it? Just curious what others with built motors have done to seat the rings on initial startup.
Drive it like you stole it. No Put 500 miles on it but don't go into boost during that 500 miles. Then for the next 2000 miles, you can go into boost, just don't go above 10 psi. No Drive it like you plan to drive it normally. No Be gentle for 2500 miles. Don't rev above 4000 RPM for that first 2500 miles. If you drive on the highway, vary your speeds. OK, I am tired of listing several of the common break-in suggestions. For my break in, I just drove the car normally. Tried not to run till redline when I could avoid it, and I changed the oil after about the first 500 to 1000 miles, switching to synthetic on the first oil change.
I say the best would take it to reline without boost if possible in every gear and let the car slow down in gear, should seat the rings with added vacuum, then drive normally. If I could, I would break it in on a dyno lol.
You want to get into boost within the first 20 miles. like 2-5 psi. Boost seats the rings. I did that and first two pulls lightly smoked. Every pull after that was clear as day. 2-5 psi and stay under 3500 rpms. After you get about 10 pulls to 3500 bump up the revs to 4000. 10 more 2-5 psi pulls. Then 4500 rpms. 10 more pulls. Dump the oil. It's gonna have material and swirl all in it if you have new bearings. That's fine. It's alos very optimal to do it on the dyno unless you live out in the boonies with wide open roads and all the cops are your personal friends like I have the pleasure of doing. Then drive it 100 miles or so just to verify no leaks, etc. Then tune it at full power on wastegate pressure only. At 500 miles change oil. Then at 1000 miles change oil and unleash the beast. Wait until 3500-5000 miles before going to synthetic. I'm toying with never going to syn.
Andy likes to let it come to temperature than turn it up to the max. I like to heat cycle everything a couple times first, get into boost slowly for the first 100 miles. I guess it is just what you feel comfortable with, but a good couple hours of driving should be enough.
I drove my brothers motor on the street for less than 10 miles, easing on to the throttle letting it build a little boost and then letting the car slow itself down under vacuum. Then I put it on the dyno and let it have it. Break it in like you are going to drive it, if you are going to drive it hard break it in hard.
