i doubt anything will come of it.

I guess I don't understand why people are spending $5K on gears for their 5MT when you can do a 6MT swap for less than that?

Your driving style and racing preference has alot to do with it. The pre 07 -6MT is not the best drag setup. The 07 is better but still not as good as the PPG options.

Because the freaking 6 speed sucks unless you can rev the engine to 8500. I drove my buddies 500 hp STi the other day and it sucked in the lower gears.

Riiip(.4 seconds), shift, riiip (.5 seconds), shift, riiip (.5 seconds), shift, riiip(.7 seconds), shift

You get my point? I'd much rather stay in gear and pull a boatload on you while you are too busy shifting.

That and the 6 speed is almost 100lbs heavier

    spec B 6sp ftw!

i tried talking a friend into buying a spec B just so i can take his 5th and 6th gear. other than that the 07 6sp is really nice

Only thing the 6sp has over the 5 is brute strength. If I could swap out my 6sp for a 5sp that would hold the power I am making, I would do it in a second.

Ditto. Why do you think I'm pulling such great times on my WRX? That's cause I'm STAYING in my powerband and not shifting. I bet LiquidForce would be slapping down some very low 11's maybe even break a 10 if he had a strong 5 speed that he could launch the daylights out of.

I've read of others putting the legacy GT 1-2 gears in the 5spd trans, gives a longer 1st and the 2nd is better spaced to match it. Not sure how much stronger it is though

Thats how the JDM STI 5speeds are geared. 4th and 5th are identical and 1-3 are all a little longer to where every gear is very evenly spaced out.

I'm happy with my JDM 5spd and very anxious to see how it likes a higher redline.

I'm very interested in these. They look VERY similar to PPG as far as the tooth root and all goes.

These look nice, I am interested to see them tested. I pulled a comparison pic from the nasioc thread...

Yeah I read this thread over there and got pretty excited cause PPG's are so damn expensive. Competition makes prices go down and thats a good thing.

If these don't break and hold as much power as the PPGs then the price will go down. I doubt these will ever make it to market. Its very expensive to make gears.

They are already almost in market. Test sets are being set out as we speak. MFactory is supposed to be very good. I've heard from several sources that that factory is who makes John Shepard's gears in his DSM trannies. I called John and he said they come from Mitsu.....yeah right and PPG's come from Subaru. Then I asked if they come from MFactory and he paused for a while and declined. So I can't blame him for not telling me who makes his gears but I can't say 100% that MFactory makes them for Shep.

However I've heard this from more than one person. Shoot if they would give me a set free and pay for installation I'll test the crap out of them and slam the gears every shift.

This is the most support for the 5MT that I have ever read. Why haven't the 5MT for the newer WRX's been improved on if high power reliability is such an issue? Especially now that the new ones are running 2.5L capable of a lot more torque.

MFactory chimed in. They are not targeting PPG's. They are NOT targeting Drag racers. They are targeting daily drivers with power like myself.

    Here's what they said

Ehhh, the only thing nice about the 6mt is how strong it is. Its way....way to heavy.

Says everyone. It seems to be the common failure area. 6sp sucks as you shift too much. 1-3 is useless practically.

well....if you use stock 04~06 USDM and JDM gearing yes.

Since I'm not a straight line kind of guy...I'd rather have the 6spd for the rally/tarmac twisty stuff.

3AT for the 1/4 mile FTMFW.

Hmmm I dunno if these gears are gonna handle that 30R I'm planning on running.

    These ratios are kinda short.

Here is the breakdown with MFactory gears with a 7250 rpm rev limit.
    1st gear - 42.252 mph
    2nd gear - 60.44 mph
    3rd gear - 82.88 mph
    4th gear - 111.60 mph
    5th gear - 187.21 mph

    Stock 2002-2005 WRX is:
    1st gear - 40.0012 mph
    2nd gear - 70.96 mph
    3rd gear - 101.14 mph
    4th gear - 142.14 mph
    5th gear - 187.21 mph

There's a HUGE jump from 4th to 5th. Mike for you that won't work with your love for drag racing. However on the street 1st - 4th will scream.

    PPG helicals are as follows:
    1st gear - 43.478 mph
    2nd gear - 73.88 mph
    3rd gear - 104.67 mph
    4th gear - 145.44 mph
    5th gear - 187.21 mph

PPG straight cut are the same except 1st gear:
    1st gear - 44.8585

    Hope this is more informative.

Who knows...I hope they do hold well. I have been following the thread as well. Supposedly they are made the same as some of the 600+ hp Honda gears. Personally I think you would have axle failure long before the gears at 600 whp.

Gearing too short for me. Hopefully they make better ratios later down the road.

Yeah but they would be FUN in the twisties. Not great for straight line stuff, but for auto-x or mountain runs it would be awesome. They actually seem similar to the Sti ratios...just not 5th gear...goes from 4th to 6th. Personally I would probably still opt for a 6 speed if it really came down to it as the 6 speed is a better designed tranny...just heavy. Now if they hold and are offered in some longer gears...that would be a different story.
