Check the vendor for sale section on Nasioc. At any given time some shop normally has a sale on gears. There are also a lot of JDM 5 and 6speeds on there.

  3. PPG thats what im saving up for. JUst type in PPG on NASIOC and a shop should pop up cant think of the name of it right now

You are thinking of www.andrewtechauto.com Sells PPG which I am saving to get. I hate the 6 speed ratios and two buddies of mine got the 6 speed swap and their car ended up slower. One is USDM STi and the other is JDM STi. I love the longer 5 speed so I am getting the PPG's which cost the same and last much longer. Straight cut 1-2 and helical 3-4.

Out of curiosity, why the striaght 1-2?

How much is it going to cost to get your gearswet swapped out? I might do this but will probly just have them replace 4th gear syncro under waranty...

    Insanely more durable than helical.

I had heard that was debatable and that there was actually more shear possibilites with those than helical...maybe I got bad info.

You are right Crash it is debatable. Most people get this combo vs all helical. When I drag my car I drag it HARD. :wiggle: And if Element Tuning's car can withstand that combo it'll work for me. I still have to save up for it so it'll take time so maybe more info on the combo's will be available. We'll see.

Cost is around $4500 for an entire tranny swapped that Andrew will get done. When I bring him my factory tranny he'll take the core charge out. A lot of money but then I'll have piece of mind for my tranny....then it's the rear end I have to worry about and the axles.:eek:hnoes:

So is the $4500 after getting money back from the core or before? This is something I want to do long term, not sure between the various gear sets, but I do want to do the PPG from what I have heard about them.....lot of money to swallow though. So when he gives the new tranny is that with new syncros and forks and everything or just new gears installed? I would hope that he replaces it with new syncros and such as well.

Yeah and both weren't breaking 300HP either. Only VF34's on mild setups.

Really the 6 speed is an option and even though you can get it for $3000 if you are lucky most people spend around 4-5 grand. Also the rear end has be taken care of to get the ratios right. For the same price get a virtually indestructable tranny and keep your rear diff and axles....they aren't gonna give that easily unless you are just purely beating the living piss out of the drivetrain and can't drive.

Does anyone here have PPG gears? I have been thinking about working towards them eventually, but not sure what is realistic or the benifits between the various combos. Some get all helical, some all striaght, some a combo, some dog, some syncro. I understand there are differences, but not sure of the trade offs for each.

For instance, what would be the drawbacks of getting a 1-5 helical ppg syncro tranny? Would it not be as strong or reliable?

No point getting 5th gear. If you break your stocker then you seriously did something wrong or you have one hell of a beast.
