If you aren't familiar with Drews car here is a link http://wrxatlanta.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23218&highlight=limited. Dan at BG put a nice solid break in tune on the motor a while ago. He had a limited amount of tuning time that he could put into it at that point and it made good power. The car has an AEM on it and this being the first Drive by wire AEM Dan had tuned it took a while to get everything dialed in. There’s a few things that he didn't get to address while he had the car and he offered to take care of them this week. I stopped by Drews place and picked up the car and I started working on a few of the issues since Dan got tied up on another customer’s car that had to be finished. Dan and I started talking and I said I would be happy to finish it if I could use the dyno and he agreed, so of course I called and ask Drew for permission and he was ok with it so I got started.

Now I have tuned a few of my own cars but never anybody else's car, I've touched up a few tunes for people here and there, but really tuning someone else's car is a little different that doing your own. I've started getting more and more interested in tuning lately and since I don't have a job right now I've had plenty of time to read and think about it. (note: I’ve owned 6 AEMs personally so its nowhere near my first rodeo)

The first thing that I wanted to do with Drews car since the tune was already fairly close was to work on the AVCS map. The AVCS tables in the AEM don't really correspond with any of the tables in a cobb or ecu flash so I was basically starting from scratch. When you build the table from scratch in the AEM every time you change the cam timing it results in some other issue, since you are in fact changing the VE or Volumetric Efficiency of that motor at that given point. You are changing the airflow into the cylinder so now the motor could be rich or lean and could have to little or to much timing. It’s a very long process to do it correctly, since with each change there are more things that have to be changed.

. I managed to get in about 50 pulls on the dyno today and made a lot of progress in the lower rpms seeing gains of almost 50 ftlbs of torque in some places. Ill be back at the shop again tomorrow and Ill probably be on they dyno most of the day. Maybe I can talk Drew into a race gas tune.

Ill post the results tomorrow so far though its looking very promising.
I did get to play with the cams just a little on the top end just before I left and its starting to pick up some power up top as well, I think it might make it over 450whp on pump but we shall see.

Ok so heres the graph, I've still got a little more to do but Dan needed the dyno for another customer so I stopped and took it out and road tuned it a little.

This is the same turbo thats in the AMS 750R kit, its a 57\58 Billet wheel turbo. The AVCS is very close but if anymore power is going to come from there its not going to be much.

The other graph that is with it is a stage 2 STI that Scott tuned while he was at Batlground. Both pulls are third gear. A fourth gear pull with the new avcs map almost follows the Stage 2 car on spoolup.

Ill post the final charts when I get a chance to finish tuning the car.

So simple a cave monk... oh never mind it's played out enough already. Good to hear you are spending your free time doing something rather constructive. From our previous conversations I was convinced that there was more to that build than what was shown on the last dyno day.

Yeah sometimes its nice to keep a little something in reserve.

I'm working on a mega badass catch can right now.

The most expensive catch can in the world right there, all AN fittings, WTF?

Yep that thing has got to go. I'm not a big meth fan but with a very small nozzle this car would be all over 500whp.

With Q16 it will make 500 pretty easy as well.

How do the US cars run the AVCS?

From my understanding the JDM cars run full advance down low and slowly taper back to 0 degrees of advance by 6K revs. And Clark Turner had some posts on nasioc saying that you can open up some more top end power if you retard the cams at higher revs (again, not sure if this is possible on US AVCS systems). I really want to learn some of this so I can be a little more knowledgeable since I know my car would benefit from a trick AVCS tweak/retune.

The US cars are exactly the same but 04-06 only have 30 degrees of advance the 07s (I've been told)have 40 degrees like the jdm cars.

Since the set I just tuned were GSCs its hard to compare them to the stock cams but I didn't get to run full advance anywhere.
Its really a long process to tune, it shouldn't be that bad on a fairly stock car since the cams should be pretty close but in Drews case I was starting from scratch.

Dan wants me to do a full write up for the Batlground Blog, Ill go into a little more detail in the Blog.

There is a lot to be gained for sure, Drews car picked up 65whp and 85 ftlbs of torque at 3800 rpms....Ill post the graphs and some details tomorrow.

Nice numbers! I wonder why the AMS kit isnt making this type of power with dual avcs on the 08+sti?

I don't know I would think it would take a lot longer to map the dual avcs. Keep in mind Drews car isn't 100 percent done its still got a little more power in it but the rough tuning of the avcs is done.

What's the dip between 5 and 55? Just something that needs ironing out?

Yeah its just rich there, I have another graph without it, its in one of the 109 dyno runs I did in drews car
