These aren't impossible to find are they? I was thinking that Nintendo wasn't going to be as big of douche bags as Sony.

It's not like Sony is making money off the ebay auctions...

What, exactly, is Sony getting out of selling fewer consoles?

  9. They just can't keep up with demand currently, however Wii can.

I know, just wondering how it makes them 'douches'. It's not like they're trying to somehow make more money by selling fewer consoles. :)

its jut the mentality of ther being ery few consoles out ther, so people will rush to get em

Exactly. A good company should figure production should be increased when they know the demand is going to be great. I mean, most of the game systems of the last 5 years have been like this, but I remeber seeing some numbers and the ps3 was by far the least distributed one.

And while it isn't Sony selling them on ebay, it is them charging 600 dollars for one. 600 dollars that they will be able to continue charging because there will be a demand for them for quite some time (due to the pathetic number distirbuted throughout the US).

I'm not really sure if it's going to cause them to make more or less money in the long run, but why not just make more to begin with?

    Just my .02.

Just went to 5 stores in Buckhead trying to find a Wii, they're sold out. I know Toys R Us in North Point has them still, but I don't feel like driving all that way. I also know most stores are getting another shipment Tues/Wednesday this week. So if I don't buy it from a store, I'm not paying much more than the 249.99 cost + tax for one

They are having some serious issues with the laser diode supply. Believe me, there's no great conspiracy to overcharge people; if they could make 10x the # of units they would. Being in the high tech manufacturing industry, I can assure you that it's not just a matter of cranking units out: supply issues can really kill you.

Hmm, ok well maybe I stand corrected. Just seems like they shouldn't have released them until they were ready to at least partially meet the demand for them. But I guess they had a release date set yada yada yada. I'll just blame it on poor company planning. :)

Still, if I were in the market for a game system. I'd probably go 360 or Wii. Wii, does look like way too much fun.

The wii is appealing to me cause it's actually better than just sitting on your couch like a fat ass...

I think that Sony sucks. Here they are under investigation by the DOJ for RAM price fixing. The proprietary formats they push in most cases are bad for the consumer (think Blu-ray, which is basically a DRM-protected DVD). By the way, formats like Blu-ray et. al. are already dead. Not to mention that some CD's that Sony put out installs a rootkit on your computer WITHOUT YOU DOING ANYTHING! (Look here). The negative publicity for Sony in the last 6 months goes on and on.

After some of these recent issues, I belive the *all* of them could have been solved ahead of time by management. I used to love Sony but after the last few months my view of them gets worse and worse after all these bad articles come out about Sony's business practices.

    Just my $.02 though.

I don't know exactly what a rootkit is, but it sure doesn't sound good.

For all intensive purposes it is a virus. It sends private data about you back to Sony, and allows other 3rd party companies to install spyware on your computer without you ever knowing it. It more or less hijacks your machine. And all of this from putting an AUDIO CD IN YOUR DRIVE JUST TO LISTEN TO IT! It was inexusable.

yes, well, most consumers don't realised those aren't standard CDs.

They do not conform to IEC 908 standards, and therefore cannot bear the 'cd-music' logo, but most people dont know to look for it because its usually ubiquitous. Any CD with strong copyprotection like this will not be actual music CDs conforming to standard.

As far as sony making money, no company except Nintendo makes money on systems. Game companies LOSE money on systems, and make money selling liscences to game-publishers on a per-copy basis. If Sony wanted to make money off the ps3, the cost should be about $850.

the nintendo wii is not very different from the Gamecube, and is far less powerful device(almost same graphics, almost same core, upclocked), thus making it much more affordable to build, and ensuring that all the parts are easily available (instead of waiting for fancy new parts like Blu Ray stuff). Additionally, most accessories, like controllers, typically have upwards 300% markup. Thats where money is made in hardward.

Lets keep this thread alive here, I have almost convinced my gf to split the cost of a Wii with me so I'm actively trying to find a store that has them in stock. Toysrus.com says they have the action bundle in stock online but it's like $580. I don't really want all those other games and rather have 2-3 extra controllers for the same price.

Please update this thread if you run into a place with Wii in stock, I'll drive in a 50mile radius to get one at the $250-300 price point. I don't feel like paying a premium that leaves my ass hurting just because of supply/demand dictates it.

    Thanks, Russ

What?!?! Sony isn't the ones secretly buying all the PS3's back and posting them on ebay for even more profit? I thought Sony was the new Google, was the New Microsoft, as the purveyor of all goods evil and vile?

Anybody have the in on when/where new Nintendo Wii's are going to arrive? I have my whole family hunting for it for a christmas gift and can't wait to get my hands on it. I'm just not willing to spend the overhead on eBay or whatever, I'd rather just wait, but not too long :).

The way I see it, Sony knows they are going to have alot of bugs in this first release that tehy will need to work out. Why put 5 million systems on the market, when they know that alot of them are going to need to be warrantied out because of issues. By limiting the amount available on initial release, they are actually cutting down on thier overhead. Less systems on the market with issues, less returns or exchanges.

about the Wii i heard that people ar eplaying the games so much, golf, tennis, baseball, whatever that their hands sweat and the controls fly out of their hands at the tv breaking the controller and/or the tv. anyone else heard about this. kind makes sense to me considering how intense people are about all this new tech coming out

Picked one up this morning! Woke up at 4:30 and went to Wal-Mart, they only had 8. Fortunately I was 1st in line, getting there around 5. They gave out tickets at 6:40 so I went to get breakfast and come back for opening, like everybody else did.

Some people came at like 6:50 and thought they were lucky, and when the store opened they raced to the entertainment section only to be turned away. I felt bad for them, but it was pretty comical watching them all make a mad dash for the back corner of the store.

Hardest part now will be waiting until x-mas day to actually open it :(

    Try this link from ps3seeker.com:

    http://www.ps3seeker.com/wii/

scroll down below the store availability chart and read the news section, news and rumors of shipment or sale dates are sometimes listed there.

You can also try blog searches for recent posts that have terms like wii and Target and "Best Buy" and shipment, or just grab the early edition of the Sunday paper, go through the ads and camp out at a store chain that's running a Sunday promotion.
