So, i've got a catless TBE and a gutted uppipe. No aftermarket EM. Holding off till after family disney trip. Also, the wife needs some time to get over the WRX purchase and quick exhaust mod. I don't really feel much difference from stock now, except the boost kicks in maybe 500-600 rpms quicker and the motor/turbo sound is beautiful music.

Question: Curious as to how much untapped horspower I have not running an aftermarket EM? For sure it's my next mod along with a pro-tune. Not sure what I'll go with but probably leaning towards having it done @ Sub of Gwinn., so whatever they reccomend I suppose.

IMO, mostly you decreased spooltime at this point. Maybe added some horses, but not a lot. If you have an 04 or 05, you might want to stay off going wide open a lot since the CL/OL transition delay is pretty bad on those cars and you could wound something. I did it for a while before I knew better, but wouldn't recommend it.

Also, pro-tune is Cobb, which means you have to use an AccessPort... or you could go with Ecutek, which is another option that the tuners here support.

i'd go with protuner... u have a LOT of untapped power... i believe u should be in the 230whp 230 wtq range with EM, TBE and uppipe

with the OTS stage 2 map from cobb i got 219/220 at TS. scott at SOG has started smoothing out the OTS maps and it feels GRRRREAT!

I'm such a newb:eek: I thought a pro-tune was having someone customize the computer using a dyno. Didn't know it was synonomous with Cobb.

I'll probably go to Scott and go with his recomendation for EM. Does SOG have a 4wheel dyno? How else could you custom tune the car? What am I looking at in terms of $$$ for custom tuning.

Maybe I should start with Cobb and use one of their pre-sets. I've got an '03WRX if that's any consideration. Is there a setting for my catless TBE and catless up pipe? Once a custom tune is done and no other mods are made would it be nesessary to re-tune every so often?

SOG has dynapak which is AWD... scott usually tunes cars on the road but will dyno tune if requested

i am not sure about pricing on accessport + pro tuner

you're looking at 600 new/500 used for the AP, are a little harder to find used for the 04/05s. protunes i believe are 300 at topspeed and you get 2 maps. Personally i'd stick with the OTS maps unless you get any other work done like a new intercooler or turbo + injectors, there's even a few cobb 2.5 OTS maps for certain IHI turbos which i can't vouch for. maybe someone on nasioc uses em though. money saved goes better used for handling equipment and tires i thinks.

The 2.5 maps for VF30/VF34 work great (I am running one). I would not necessarily stick with the OTS maps as they are very conservative and there's a fair amount of extra power to be had with a protune.

You are not confused, the Protuner allows someone like Siegel to tune the car via dyno or road, the Street tuner, which is less costly and offers less control, is made for the knowledgeable DIY'er, while the basic AP just allows you to load pre-defined maps. In other words, you won't buy Protuner yourself. All you need it the AP and possibly Street Tuner if you decide you are ready to play with maps and such (not something I will be doing...).

If you're running a turboback--with or without a catless uppipe--you're good for the Stage 2 maps with the AccessPort. Not sure what other mods you have, but Cobb specifically frowns upon most aftermarket intakes unless they're guaranteed not to screw with your MAF readings.

You are robbing yourself of valuable power by sticking with the OTS maps. You will be happier if you protune the car as well. Give SS a call today and see if he can squeeze you into an appt soon or simply just ask him a few questions about the entire process. Why most of us enjoy tuning by Scott (besides the results), is that he will walk you through everything and explain to you what is going on. Its tough to beat if you dont know what you are doing and are curious to know.

    Thanks

I appreciate all the info. I'm leaning toward getting a Cobb AP as soon as I can free up some $$. I can run the preset maps until I can afford having a pro tune it for me.
