I recently pay more attention and due to price of gas - I spend more time in the higher gears 3,4,5 In those gears especially in town i change over less then 3k rpm (ok no jokes bout grandma) and the engine has to work a little to get up to speed but im ok with that BUT recently i noticed a ticking sound after switching gears especiall 3 & 4 th gear. I only have AP and no other mods. Is that tick an engine tick or the famous boxer tick. How do i distinguish and if its engine tick what can i do to eliminate it (or leave it alone)
Is it a rapid tick? or is it a knock? I would make sure you have your AP set on conservative A/F since you aren't running boost. I have never heard of a tick either. Is the tick coming from your boost gauge? I know my gauge ticks because of the turbulent air flow in the manifold when I am only on the gas lightly.
I agree! when the boxer motor breaks in it begins to tick or tap a little louder than usual. Just have to get used it I guess. You know it is basically the only motor in the world that sounds blown when it is in perfect working condition.
i have noticed the boxer "shake" but not the "tick"..it good be the valves maybe? I have heard that the valve train is noisy but i have never heard it myself?
Isn't valve tapping bad? Sounds like there is a tolerancing issue with the head if that is the case... I didn't know "The Tick" came in WRB.
It's not a tick. It's more of a twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt-twt..... ....when the turbo is working hard. Some turbos sound different than others. Seriously though if you guys really don't know what we're taking about it must mean that a boxer-engined car was your first car and you just don't know the difference.
Sounds sorta like a sowing machine. It can be heard at idle. Some are louder than others. I have heard a bunch of subies and they all had it to some degree.
Mm hmm. I believe the Legacy design was such that they specifically tuned that sound out with insulation or something. I actually asked one of the service guys at SOG if it was normal right after I bought my car because I was like wtf?
I have a feeling its low on Oil I will go check tonight I read a lot of articles on NASIOC and almost every posting there is someone suggesting check oil - may be low oil was <1/4 qt from max mark I topped of and still have slight tick Will add a new post so not to dilute this post
