as you guys know from my previous thread, my car is trying to shut off when i go from a gear to neutral... so, i cleaned my IVAC and the MAF sensor. i must admit though, i could not get my MAF sensor to come out (two screws being on there for 117k miles) so i just sprayed the MAF cleaner from the intake box end and the round hose end, and let it dry for about a good hour. when i opened up my IVAC, (the two screws were giving me a damn hard time but i had no other way to get to the inside without opening it up so i used an impact screw) i cleaned it with some gas that was sitting at my garage (possibly a two-stroke engine gas) using soaked up cotton swabs.. i was worried about the gas i used to clean it with, but so far, no sign of weird smoke :sx:.

both Ped and Crashtke suspects vacuum leak, but to be honest, i have no clue where it is.. (what hoses relate to vacuum that is)
but after cleaning the IAVC and the MAF the car only tries to drop the rev below the 500 mark when i step on the clutch quick.. if i ease on to the clutch while slowing down, it doesnt drop the rev :squint:
although the rpm still sort of bounces up and then down..

    HELP!!!

you could... just look at boost and see what the boost is at idle

it reads -8.5 to -8.8 psi

ugh why do companies use negative "psi" as a measurement. :unamused:

I would pressure test the system, I did that last week and found a huge crack in my turbo.

TS will take good care of you and I wouldn't imagine it would be more than a half hour labor.

Are you getting a very loud 'BOV hiss' sound when you let off of boost? (assuming you don't actually have a BOV) If so one of the intercooler hoses might be loose, I've had this happen before.

My vacuum (as read by AP v2) at idle with stage 2 flash averages about -9.4

this might be a good starting point to look! when i let off, (i wouldnt call it super loud) it does vibrate quite hard and it sounds more like, 'grrr' haha.. kind of hard to explain.

Updates? If you weren't way up there in Suwanee I'd come help you tinker with it.
EDIT: well I guess it's not as far as I thought. Let me know if you need help, I'm certainly no master tech but I'm pretty good at troubleshooting.

if you`re gonna help me, i dont mind driving to your place at all.. but i will be busy all this week so it looks like i`m gonna be taking my brother's tiburon down to savannah; hope it's reliable :sx: (but then again it had less problems than my wrx although his car is stock... i thought my mods help the car not hurt it :squint:)

Eww that doesn't sound good. Is it a constant smell or only getting it at certain times?
Only bad thing about driving here is I live at an apt with no garage or tools. I can make the drive up - with some advanced notice we might be able to get a couple more experienced locals up there as well. I have no experience doing a DIY boost leak test but would love to learn how :) . Never know though, could be something simple - extra set of eyes always helps.

the car also stutters when i start it up... again, new battery, new clutch, i dont know what the problem is but i assume it's the leak that is causing all this.. what is that burning smell though arghh

How soon after the new clutch install did these problems start?

  27. mokinbird87

    mokinbird87 Active Member

hmm.. i think it started after the clutch install actually..

Well I don't know who did your install, but you have to remove the intercooler and several other parts that have air connections when doing a clutch install. It is very probable that one of the clamp hoses either to the intercooler or one of the other housings popped off after the install was done. Mine did the same thing. As for the burning smell...could be the hot air roasting a wiring component or something worse-case. Hopefully it's just some oil or some kind of fluid burning off that got spilled. Go out and check every connection to the intercooler (bigass thing on top under hood scoop), both with the car off and on (careful w/hands) to see if it's leaking there. I think there's a total of 4 connections associated with it, but that's entirely from weak memory.

well, today after turning on the heater to defrost, i found out when i have A/C on it makes it MUCH worse!! would a vacuum leak be associated with A/C?

It's posted on this site numerous times. Scott Siegel put up a nice how to a while ago. Search for boost leak test.

i think the amount of money/time it takes me to find out what's wrong, paying someone to get it fixed will be more efficient haha.. but really the stupid leak is killing my gas mileage and my car feels so much slower!!!!!!! the boost hesitates also... like, it builds and then goes away???

Dude, just pay TS to do a pressure test and look over all of your vacum lines. It will probably be well worth the $90.
