well, I was using the Eagle 1 a2z wheel & tire cleaner.

its great stuff and loosens the toughest brake dust up in a hurry, but let my error be a guide for you guys, don't let it mix with another chemical or soap.

it chewed up & spit out the enamel on my stock 16s, & now theres a runny mark on one...

JT & Ped suggested I paint them, I was thinking flat black would be tuff looking. Is there any good writeups out there for what I wanna do?

I mean, do i need to specially pre-treat? would i seal it with a matte sealant?

for flat black go to auto zone and they have rim paint (flatblack) that you dont have to do anything but clean properly and paint.

Just make sure the wheels are clean, making sure to get all the
soap residue and brake dust off.

Go to walmart and get some Krylon - whatever color - and use that.
I've got a couple of cans left that you can have if you want them.
Or bring your car over and we'll get them painted up in no time.
I haven't tried the autozone paint.

Just remember, lots of light coats.
No need to seal. The only thing that's happened to mine are
    1) Amol scratching some off  (he thought it was caked on brake dust)
    2) rock chips. All I did was pull the wheel off and repaint the affected area. Didn't even bother cleaning it.

I've been VERY happy with mine. No more brake dust rocks!!

i told a couple of (admittedly non-subaru) car people about my plans to paint the wheels & got some pretty sour reactions...

anyone got some pictures of their ride or anyone elses with flat black?

    blah, don't listen to them.
If you want them black, paint them black.
Then if you decide you don't like it you can pressure wash the paint off.
Hell, the mix of stuff you were using to clean your wheels with initially will
probably clean the paint off as well.

You can check my garage. I **think** I've got a couple of pics there.

I did a quick sanding on Mere's with 220 or 330grit sand paper when I painted them.

but flat black is more forgiving of a paint than Berry Pink.

I am thinking about flat blacking my stock evo wheels.

i just did this. stockers are almost flat black. the paint i got was little more shiny than pEd's. i'll post picts of it. i left the tires on the rims and did nothing but use fantastic to clean them. the best advice, if you have tires on the rims, is to slide index cards or some kind of heavey weight paper between the rims and tire (overlaping them). then use painter's tape or something to wrap your valve stems. done deal.

as long as it went on a neutral silver car, I think you can get away with almost any colour application. I've seen OSHA orange on an astrovan around here...

also, do you think to mask any part of the wheel? like the cap, or the logo, or lug nutz or anything

I would say paint them pink, but that isnt my job. BrianGT should suggest that soon enough.

You should battle Brian for the wheel colors, and paint yours purple!
