Ok so I wasn't really sure where to post this but here goes...

I've seen pictures of people running their cars through cone courses and such in what looks to be large parking lots. This brings me to 2 questions:

    1) Does anyone know people that hold events where you can drive through cone courses here in atl? or near Marietta?

    2) Does anyone know of any large, safe, slightly hidden (to avoid any trouble) parking lots that could be used for trying to learn to drift and pushing a car to find it's limits?

I've had a little bit of play in a few lots and on the roads but I really wana let it loose and find out what my new STi can do... Any ideas/suggestions are welcome...

Cone courses are usually autocross and sometimes gymkhana. If you look at the calendar you'll see several auto-x events. M-chan and BrianGT know more about it than me.

there are grassroots drifting events also that are similar to autocross (drifting through cones)... however u would be more competitive with a RWD car

Right now for me the competition is not important just the learning experience. I've heard of people semi-successfully using the DCCD to have a rear bias for drifting. Can anyone vouch for that?

ive seen some videos of STi's drifting... granted it isnt impossible but ur better equipped with a RWD car... btw, a lot of people make the mistake of pulling the e-brake to induce a slide... DO NOT do that if u have any love for ur center diff

I've heard that about the e-brake too. I don't need it... I can get her slidin without it pretty easily. Body weight, throttle blip, or a little flick does the trick :).

Drifting in an STI is much more probable than drifting in a WRX. The front diff and more power from the 2.5 block make it much more capable of drifting. That said, you may be able to do a small drift, which will actually be more like a power slide, but the AWD system will not allow you to maintain the drift as you would want to do in a drifting event. With the STI you would never be able to be competative or even slightly close to anyone in a drifting event. AWD is the worst thing for drifting. You would probably be better off in a FWD.

In a WRX it is next to impossible to drift, without the help of wet/snow/ice covered ground.

There is a company that has a conversion kit for the STi that makes it RWD. Search NASIOC for it....might be what you want if you are really into the drift scene

Did Permanent Numbers carry over from last year? I just went to Soloatlanta to sign for my numbers and I am already listed with my numbers from last year.

Im moving this to the Newbies section. See if you can talk with Scooby Drew, he has a parking lot hookup that includes a little bit of sliding action.

I don't really plan on seriously drifting the sti... I guess what i'm doing now around corners in roads and such is either small drift or powerslide. I do however plan on eventually buying a rwd car (240 or something similar) to build for a drift machine...

And about the rwd conversion, i have thought about it but i LOVE awd too much to do that... :)

I think Merideth and Chris can tell you that my WRX can drift like a Nissian. It's all in how you drive and how your car is setup.

I'm pretty sure you have to re-register your numbers again this year
