Anyone run these? I've read the Nasioc comparo and they seem very nice. I can pick up a lightly used coated set is for sale for around $600 shipped. Thoughts?
No more burble burble though right? I thought the stock headers weren't that bad until you got really high up in HP/TQ numbers?
Well from the nasioc dyno plots, the STi test car was only running a cobb stage 2 map. The stock to Perrin equal-length comparison shows 35tq/30hp over most of the rpm range. This is without coating or wrap and no tuning. And yes, the subaru burble would be gone.
Theyve done a couple over at SoG, maybe they can chime in! I personally thing a Subaru with headers sounds sick! DO IT!
I got the gruppe-s header i haven been able to get on it but its got a deeper sound at idel. Amber said OH I LIKE THAT SOUND
Yeap, the perrin looks pretty sweet, only bad part is the price. If you can find one reasonable I would say DO IT!! Think better flow, better spool with coatings, and smooth power. Just what I have read. No first hand experience.
I think this is one of the worst $ to power upgrades. Thats just my opinion. So much more power can be bought for similar $. Not to mention, no more boxer burble.
Maybe my math is poor, but I get: Accessport ($695) & DP ($575): ~50hp - $1270 = $25/hp (based upon my previous gains with Cobb Stage 2) Perrin EL Headers: ~25hp - $600 = $24/hp (conservative number based upon the nasioc dyno plots running Cobb Stage 2) I never would have bought a brand new Perrin because of cost, but used with coating it was a deal. I guess time will tell what the gains truly are. Oh, and it's a subaru burble, not a boxer burble. Lots of boxer engines don't have the inefficient burble piping.
The cobb alone can give you close to 50hp. The dp alone can give you about 25hp. You can get a catted dp on gruppe-s for $350. The Headers without Cobb gives you very little. I am not disagreeing with you, it could be a good choice if you already have Cobb and lots of other upgrades. Porche's already have a equal length header I realize this. The same goes for my 71 Super Beetle. All boxers could burble with unequal length headers, not just Subaru's.
I think 75hp (50+25) from Cobb OTS map + DP is a little optimistic, honestly. As for headers, I would really like to see some good comparisons and results, there's a lot of discussion out there but little substance.
A guy here has everything i go except the header i got the gurppe-s ones he has the stock. Once my motor gets broke in maybe him and i could do some head to head stuff and see if theres a difference
Hahahaha, holy shit it's a small world. I'm 99% sure I know that guy from back in the days when we had f-bods.
Do the equal length headers still need an uppipe??or do they go all the way to the turbo?? Thanks for the info johnnyboy.
Perrin ones does not include an up-pipe, any uppipe that will fit a factory header will fit the Perrin. Some other ones come with an up-pipe or have one built in.
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=1440737127 Theres the Gruppe-s headers
I found this vid of the APS equal length headers. I like the sound. Hello there Doug. http://vevor.shackspace.com/Temp/APSHeaderWeb.wmv (right click, save as)
My question: For $600, dont you think you could invest in something else that would generate greater gains ? But on second though, if you have the money, just go with it. They provide justifiable gains throughout the entire band
I actually think it sounds smoother and a little better, lol. I guess it is like all the only Harley owners liking the misfiring and backfiring of the poorly tuned "Harley sound".
EL headers would be great for a car with alot of money invested in it already. soemthing thats makin prob 500+whp
Just wondering why headers should be last... some provide nice gains across the band even on less modded cars.
Personally I'd just spend a grand on a bigger turbo that can easily be swapped back to stock than on headers which are much more to install/remove.
Bigger turbos are nice, but come with a penalty (slower to boost). After seeing some of these header dyno numbers, I would definitely consider getting some.
More boost sooner for a killer mid range...putting this on the list of things to get before swapping out the 2.0 engine. Looks like the equal length guys really shine on our engines. None of the ones that I have seen tested were coated either...I imagine with some good coatings or wrap it would also help even more.
