Would anyone know what sort of power potential an EJ22T equipped early 90's Subaru Legacy may have? I'm looking for a second car to commute and possibly rallycross in later. I was looking at SVX's but a beater Legacy AWD turbo might be a better idea.
well its a fully closed deck, oil squirters, forged internals, and that jazz. if you check out legacy central you will find endless information and cheap parts for sale. http://bbs.legacycentral.org/ There are a ton of modded ej22t people there. For power, there are a few i have seen with vf-34's and all thoses series turbos. with a 34 and supporting mods it would be quicker than a wrx but slower than a sti. I say go for it, i have a friend with one a few years ago and it was a fun little beater, but make sure its a manual. The auto slush boxes will kill any high power dreams you have. All Svx's are only Automatics, so stay away from that. -Andrew
The block of the legacy ej22t is great, mix that with the wrx or rs heads and it'll be as fast as an Sti. Well that's the case in the GC chassis' at least.
While I'm sure the closed block is very strong, does anyone know why current STIs do not use it and instead use a semi-closed design? Is it just for increased cooling capacity with a semi-closed block?
The casting method of the closed deck is VERY expensive, and it holds in heat too well so you have to run super large radiator.... Otherwise, 400 crank is the limit on the stock internals.
