Not sure where this belongs, but wanted to get opinions on replacement of power steering fluid. Has anyone done this? At what mileage? It isn't listed in the PM schedule. Let me know your thoughts.
I'd replace it at 60k miles, unless you have issues before that*. It uses standard ATF as its fluid. I would highly recommend using the 5AT ATF in the system as it is a MUCH better fluid over the normal Dexron 3 used in the 4EAT and power steering systems. *If you autox or do any other motorsport or lots of spirited driving...you will need to change it more often, AND I would highly recommend a fully sythetic fluid such as the Motul or Castrol. Mobil 1 also makes a synthetic ATF. Usually synthetic ATF goes for about $6 to $10 a quart. Its difficult to find. Most LARGE auto parts stores have them.
I've had frequent problems with my power steering fluid on really hot days that the track or autox.... I'm sure all the extra heat is degrading/boiling the fluid. I had will change mine at 40K and haven't had a problem this summer; I'm most likely going to get it flushed again at the begining of next season as well.
Is it easy to replace. Do you disconnect a line and let it drain until empty? Will- What is the 5AT fluid - is that Subaru fluid for a 5 sp auto?
I have a flush machine that I hook it up to...its what I did iwth Meredith's STi. Your WRX would be the same. Yes, its the SUBARU ATF for the 5 spd automatic transmission. It kicks ass.
