Power Steering whine, any ideas?

Hey guys, my power steering started whining last week. I have a few ideas what it could be, but I wanted to see what the collected wisdom of the site thinks. For starters its an 04 STi with about 90k on it, I think it has something to do when I replaced the belt, when I noticed the whine I opened the hood and noticed the new belt was eaten up. So did I kill the pump by making the belt to tight? The fluid was really brown, so I have started flushing the fluid, but haven't finished the job yet. Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

how do you start flushing the fluid and not finish?

it sounds like it's low on fluid

  3. definitely do a complete flush. make sure the fluid is full. check for leaks.if it still whines then your pump could be bad

Ya I started flushing it, but had to quit, so I am gonna finish it this weekend. It looks like there is a lot of air in the fluid so hopefully that will do it.

jack up front wheels till they are off the ground, fill to the full mark and turn your wheels lock to lock about twenty times each way. check your fluid, then do it again. Can't see how it would be any different than priming the pump on the Ranger

    Do what breel said first.

Does it affect the steering? When my pump went bad, the steering would suddenly lose power assist and I had to man-handle the wheel. And I mean MANHANDLE.

Bearing maybe? Trace around the belt and see if anything is touching it that shouldn't be.

It was losing power sometimes at low speeds, like pulling into a parking space, but only at certain points in the turn. Looks like it may be time to replace the pump.

it is that time, you will have to prime the new pump as well so repeat the steps I listed in my first reply to get any air out of the system just to be safe
