It depends what Series etc you want to run in. Just to turn it into a nice track car I would plan on spending a minimum of 20k dollars.

I would assume that a race prepped car currently for sale wouldn't be up to current standards. It may be easier and more fun to start with a street car and convert it over time as budget allows. For $8k you could get a salvaged title '02/03 WRX (or something less expensive), strip it down, buy slicks, and hit a few track days. Or build a Spec Miata... Or get into Karts...

As most people say "take what you think will spend and multiply it by three".... on top of making the car run you need: Saftey equipment (suit, helmet, seat etc), a license if you plan to wheel to wheel (about ~$400 minimum for SCCA), a tow vechicle, spares (as you will break stuff), tires, entry fees..... the list goes on.

You'd be spending about $25k to get it up and running correctly. Most likely MORE.

I wouldn't touch it unless you have unlimited monies.
