I've had a popping noise in my 04 STI ever since I bought it a little over a year ago. I just recently found the culprit. My rear axles have a little play horizontally (maybe 1/16th of an inch). When I de-celerate and accelerate again they pop when they slide outward toward the wheels. Is this normal, or is that a sign of wear and need to be replaced. I checked SUBY_RUE's 05 and his have about the same play but no pop. Also, if it's normal...is there an easy fix? :coolugh:

nicad Yes I am a troll

this is normal. the axle is designed to slide axially inside the DOJs (double offset joint)

did you check the axle boots? I would guess one of the DOJ joints has failed or is lacking in grease. if not that, a wheel bearing but I'm leaning towards an axle

I am pretty sure it's an 04 STi thing, I have the same thing, but everything I have read says it's normal.
