dood. Ped and I have talked to you about this. Check out ped's and superdudes Stop procrastinating..... I think someone mentioned powder coating runs about 75 a wheel.
ped didnt even do that. all he did was wash really good and paint. you tires are black a lil over spray wont show.
i know but if you want the best quality you gotta do it, paint will fade due to heat etc. powder coat wont do that
Guess it depends on how ANAL you are Go buy your paint bigb and give it a shot. If you have your stockers toss them on while u paint up your wheels
you can refinish the wheels how many times for the cost of powdercoating? it all depends on what your using the wheels for. and theres always that 'powdercoat baking decreases wheel strength' discussion...
I had my rota slipstreams in royal gunmetallic sandblasted for $10/wheel and then powder coated to gold for $35/wheel. It was definitely worth it. There is a really good place in Atlanta that can do it all for like $65/wheel, thats if they have to sandblast and powdercoat. I had mine done in S.C. The wheels were slightly warped after the powdercoating probably, but I never checked their alignment before powdercoating, so I can't be sure.
Brian, If you need to take your wheels off for a few days and need to drive the car you're welcome to borrow my stockers...
Dude, you can have them painted in about 2 hours. Pull them off. Clean them. Paint them. If you don't like it, carry it to the powder coaters. You'll be out like $15 in paint (if even that) You can find glossy black spray paint. Give me a call and I'll help you out. Make it go even faster so you're not stuck w/o a vehicle all day. Do eeeeettttt. The force is with you young jedi
I don't know truthfully.... I've only used Krylon on the past 3 sets of wheels I've painted. I really don't see any reason it wouldn't work.
If the paint on my lip is peeling off and there is brake dust on the wheels, do I need to sand them? Sorry for the threadjack. Ive had the same question.
I do believe it is Miller's Powdercoating, thats the place in Atl. that I have heard is really good. I had my sandblasting done at T&S Industrial, Westminster, S.C. and powdercoating at Vanguard, Anderson, S.C. Worst case scenario, by a sander bit for a cordless drill and just rough them up in the backyard and spray and clear coat them. It will last a good while, but not nearly as long as powdercoating. Definitely get rid of the crap on your wheels, it will just cause it to chip sooner.
yeah, you might want to sand them just so you don't have that area look a little wierd. Otherwise, if you're not worried about it, wash the brake dust off and spray away.
If the brake dust won't come off, just know that the paint may not stick and will probably peel off or bubble up. You could always try a small area and see what it does, that way you don't waste a lot of time and effort on something that won't work until you get the brake dust off.
hmm....powerdercoating sounds likea good plan. Cheaper than a new set of wheels. Ped i think im gonna paint them black first to make sure htats the color i want. I found a great write up on nasioc but would probably prefer a little help. I get paid friday and might look into doing it next week sometime. Moose, thanks for the offer man i will let you know
Come on over. fire up the grill if you want man. The house is a wreck with the tiling job It will be done in a week and a half.. woo hoo
for those of you who know me, i am the master of cutting corners to save money. el gato negro was a great example of that. my point is if you dont powder coat, you wont have the long term quality that you will in powder coating, and i think that when it comes to paint i dont think that you can cut corners. i would save and wait and come with some powder coating. i think that you would be the most happy with that and it will be a jopb that will last as a daily driver.
I did it. To give the paint some longevity, I used engine paint. I used a semi gloss black that supposedly matches a ford engine? heh, whatever. I removed the wheels. cleaned them really good with some bleach-white, then used a green scotch pad to make sure the paint had a surface to really dry good on. I then wiped the wheels off with a moist towel to make sure there was no dust from the scotch pad rubbing, taped the tires off, then painted away. Just be patient when painting. I made many passes with the paint before the entire wheel was covered. You can always make another pass with the paint, but if it starts dripping from too much paint... thats trouble. EDIT: Oh, and as a side note: brake dust shows up better on the black wheels... nothing like the nice brown coat of dust in the corners... sheesh.
Did mine Duplicolor graphite. Took all day to clean up, scuff and paint the stockers. Used about 5 coats of paint and 3 clearcoat. Directions don't mention using primer but I think Duplicolor does have a primer for wheels. They came out looking great. Didn't look like it came out of rattlecan at all. After a couple of weeks some of the paint has come off. Maybe rock chips, I'm not sure why but if I did it again I'd throw a couple of coats of primer on first. Glad I did 'em though. Didn't want to invest to much in wheels especially as a first mod.
yea im gonna look into the powercoat after i paint a quick coat to make sure of what color i want to do.
