So I have this Belkin Wireless router. And I keep losing internet connection for like 30 seconds every 3-4 minutes. I'm not sure but I THINK it happens when the router gets too hot because, it will work for half a day or so then it will start disconnecting me. So i unplug it for like 30 minutes when it starts doing this. This get's really annoying because other people in the house have to use the internet too :/. So does anyone know what could cause this problem? Or is there anyway to keep my router cooler?

  2. Over load?? how many peopel are pulling off of it wireless?

This isn't really solving your problem, but I have recommended NetGear routers to everybody I know and nobody has had troubles with them. Mine's been up for 2+ years with zero issues. Cheap, too.

dunno if this could be the problem, but i hear if you don't have a firewall or some kind of encryption...all your fellow neighbors and surrounding could be leaching off of ya causing it to loose connection. at least my co-worker that is a pewter guru told me this, and made my connection to where no one else can connect to it.

Yah, i'm thinking about getting a new router. Cause this router screws up way too much, and i think it only allows 1 person on wireless at a time lol. When i connect to wireless my cousin cant connect to it lol, and when she connects, i cant connect. so yah. And yea, i have WPA encryption on my wireless.

You sure it is the router and not the wifi connection service that is running on your laptop. Sounds like a querky windows issue with the Microsoft's Wireless Zero Configuration service.

If your router is functioning fine check for a service called Microsoft's Wireless Zero Configuration service. Make sure the service is running. As soon as you acquire your wifi connection disable this Microsoft's Wireless Zero Configuration service service and see if you connection stays connected.

i have this same issue running on xp

personally i would go with linksys, they are actually cisco (the company hardware that runs most of internet)

then make sure you are using a min 128k WEP security if you go wireless, along with the firewall (comes with the app cd)

the issue definitely sounds like a heat problem. i had this problem a few weeks back (i'm running a ms router-don't ask it was a cheap deal and you get what you pay for) and bought two small fans to cool it and the server drives down. so far no problems but i will have to get a linksys ultimately just to have a more solid hardware config. their stuff is fairly bullet proof now that it's cicso made.

netgear doesn't make shit though, so if you wanna go that route for savings, you shouldn't get burned. none-the-less, you may wanna just buy a little fan from target (like a desk fan) and have it pointing on your connectivity gear-you can never have too much air flow.

newegg does kick ass... great prices, i've bought several things from them.

If you are using the G or B signal its almost identical to Microwave and cordless phone frequency and if the signal is crossed it needs to reset. So try to use other than the standard signal try using signal option 1 o2 or 10 more

Go for a Linksys WRT54G. I just got one and it's been great!

Had a non wireless linksys router for several years before hand and it's been a great router. Until it died recently from what I believe was a mini-power surge.

Their easy to setup and pretty quick.

took me forever to decide as well. I went looking at Netgear but they have iffy recommendations. Seems to be about half and half. Some have issues the others are problem free.

My NetGear wireless router is still running strong after 4 years. Plus it has a cool config interface.

Find someone witha signal strength checker and see if the signal is strong enough for your modem. I had a problem with this. I had a splitter that cut down my signal too far so it did the same thing you describe. You can always try hooking it up closer to the point where the cable comes into your hosue...

You are correct. The way i like to do it is with MAC address security. That way you enter the MAC address of each computer that you want to allow to sign on into the router and no others can get on. That way you don't have to bother with setting up each individual computer to work with the security either... Just a thought.
