Since I have to remove my DP to install my UP and Exhaust manifold. I would like to research some Shorty DPs. Mainly to keep stock exhaust and possibly go to stage 2 with my AP. I would like to keep at least one CAT in the system to keep the smellies away.

    Question:
1.Advantage or disadvantage of Shorty DP
2.Will it mate with existing MidPipe (MP)
3.Who makes shorty DPs (Stromung and Bosal, and ???)
4.Will I need to mod the sensor on the MP if i have a shorty DP ?

    thanks in advance

I recommend Crucial Racing DP if you have to have shorty dp. It mates up with stock 3rd cat perfectly. So you will have choice to have full catless or one high flow cat in the future. HOWEVER, if you thinking about getting full exhaust in the future, GO with either Invidia or Helix. In that way, you can save money.

You can PM our vendor "Sakari Motorsports" for more info. I bet he will recommend you according to your needs.

Okay, I headed to NASIOC and did some research. It seems Stromung, Bosal and Crucial all make Shorty DP's with Crucial being coated inside and out. The Crucial also seems to have a better overall fitment than the other two. It also seems that the CEL fix is needed when the DP is replaced and can be accomplished one of three ways, 1) Mechanical CEL fix, 2) Electric CEL fix or 3) EM Cel fix. SinceI won't be installing mine until I can get an AP, I guess this won't be an issue? All three of the above mate to the stock mid pipe, again, with Crucial seeming to have had the least issues with Fitment. Any first hand accounts of any of these DP's would be greatly appreciated!

Would it not be possible to have catback after I mod with a shorty and stock midpipe and maybe hiflow midpipe. ?
Is it because of the pipe size ?

Bosal is not 3" (someone mentioned)

Whats the pricing of catted DP compare to a stock MP w/ shorty DP?

    thanks again guys

scoobysport has one of the best torque curves of any dp. it mates perfectly to your stock mid pipe and turbo. hand-made in England. www.Haywardandscott.com

I purchased a stromung shorty dp from a fellow atlwrx member. I must say this was a very nice improvement over stock. The boost felt like it came on a lot earlier with a lot less lag before hand. Also, at slow speeds when the wastegate is actuating it sounds really nice. There is a low pitch chirp that draws some good attention. I think having the divorced wastegate pipe is really a big difference over the stock flat plate in front of the wastegate. So I am on the same track as you to get a highflow mid and be done with the exhaust.

Why would you want to keep the stock midpipe? Its catted and its heavy.

I need to keep one cat within a certain distance of the original 2nd and 3rd cats in order to compete in STX in auto-x. Easiest way to do that is to keep a cat in the midpipe. Mostly likely way to pass emissions as well.

Its less expensive than the full downpipe, and you can buy it in sections while still getting some gains. Eventually the stock pipe will go.

I just put a bosal short dp on my wrx this past weekend. Fitment wasn’t the greatest on the bottom end of it. The bolt that keeps the dp to the side of the tranny didn’t fit at all. This took some time to figure out but ended up working after some motivation. I can’t really say how much power the DP gave because I also did an Access port at the same time. I am still running the stock midpipe and it still is very quick compared to what it was. It sounds very nice while driving as well.

    PS-it’s only a 2.5inch

If the dp is catless, then definitely yes you will need a CEL fix. You hook up to the sensor in the midpipe right after the cat. I had no problems with fitment on my Stromung top or bottom. Its a little difficult to torque down the bottom bolts on the connection to the turbo. You can also save your stock heat shield. Get a pair of snips and cut a notch to fit around the divorced wastegate pipe. Takes a couple of extra minutes, but keeps the heat down. Wear gloves though.

newb question: so a non-shorty dp replaces the midpipe section, but a shorty doesn't? So does a regular downpipe eliminate both cats?

I don't really understand what you don't get, because you repeat yourself. You have to splice in the CEL fix like the instructions say that come in the box. The sensor is right before catalytic converter on the midpipe. Here is a diagram http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1029. Its the rear O2 sensor.

A full size dp will replace both cats unless there is one in the pipe. A shorty just replaces the downpipe section, but not the front midpipe.

Ming, you said the same thing twice there buddy, what is it that you mean. Clemson is correct, the 02 sensor is right there ON the midpipe, it isnt inside of it, it is a bung that is on the outside.
