I've talked to several folks about heat wrapping (whatever its called) my aftermarket downpipe when I get it. They said wrapping your DP may rust/crack it because it keep the mosture in...espeically in humid places. What is ya'lls take on this? Thanks in advance.

Heat wrap it! No doubt about it. I ran mine without wrap, then popped the hood, and the underhood temps were unbelievable. After wrapping it, underhood temps dropped bigtime which is crucial with a TMIC. As far as the rust issue, i have not had a problem with that at all. Hope this helps man.

Or you can CC it :) That is my personal preference, we'll be signing a new poweder coating / ceramic coating vendor soon, so you can wait till he's onboard. His pricing will be excellent!

nice Alex! yeah i won't be putting the TBE on until i get back in May anyways. i'll stand by and keep my eyes out for this vendor. If not, I guess I'll wrap the SOB.

I agree with both the above, or for the ultimate win you can do both, Cermanic Coat that pipe, then wrap with the thermal wrap. That is what I plan to do at some point when I have money again.

:werd: I hear yah haha, at some point I will pull the DP, headers, and have it all CC in black. I want to CC the exhaust all the way back to the tip for the sleakness factor. There should be so much less heat :sx:

CC is great, but wrapping works QUITE well also. I wouldn't worry too much about the rust - remember, that thing gets 600+ degrees every time you run it, it dries it out pretty fast ;) I haven't seen one rust yet... If they're stainless, they shouldn't.

True, and everything is generally SS 304.

I have wrapped a number of DPs and on mine I ended up painting the wrap with some 2000 deg paint to act as a sealer.

Note that with wrapped headers you need to be real careful when adding oil. Dropping oil on wrapped headers is a easy way to test out your in-car fire extinguisher (or lack there of).

but on the other hand it would look cool with the flames shooting out from under the car at 75mph

Speaking of fire.. how many of you keep a fire extinguisher in your car? I just picked one up the other day myself, not sure why I hadn't before since they're not very expensive.

I don't quite feel the need for the Fire Extinguisher in the car right now, I don't drive a Corvair. Once I make the plunge into the Meth Addiction, then that will change, but it will most likely be mounted on the floor of the front passenger compartment, just like the rally car. I even found a nice Prodrive Fire Extinguisher.

Back on wraps... I was doing some reading, and noticed you can buy exhaust wrap silicone sealant from DHI. Guess that'd mostly eliminate the risk of oil soaking into the wrap and burnination.

Now that I'm back to TMIC, starting to think about these things. :) Also, anybody running a turbo wrap/blanket?

yes it does and does not eliminate oil soaking. Its not as thick as you would like. what i would do is get it hot-jet coated! Turbo wrap/blanket over the turbo will cut down on air temp and it will cold down your turbo faster!

If you cannot find any locally, ebay has some wholesalers on there. I think actually SOG may sell some (I vaguely remember seeing it in one of their "display" cases by parts...I think).

All of the JGTC guys use heat wrap. Do they use that in conjunction with cc coatings? Anyone know?

  29. Thanks for the link STiLLsLow. I'll probably be getting a wrap, blanket, and grounding kit from them.

i keep an extinguisher in my car not so much because I'm worried about me, but more the other guy.

i was in the staging lanes at Commerce when the classic Cadillac next to me caught fire in the engine. If you've been to Commerce, you know those staging lanes are crowded & there's nowhere to go. The guy was trying to beat it out when someone threw me an extinguisher from the other side of the fence and i put it out. I decided there that I would always have my own.
