*sniff sniff* Is that something burning? [new pics] Was backing into the gas station today into a spot and all of a sudden a crazy ton of smoke began pouring out everywhere, hood, scoop, interior panels. Alright, so I killed the car and something like oil is burning I thought to myself. I get out, push it off the side of the BP. Of course, everyone is just standing there looking. No one offered help. It isnt that it is difficult the move the car by yourself, but I mean seriously, come on... So I get the car parked and pop the hood. To my surprise, there is a fist sized flame on my turbo...ON MY TURBO. Haha, so what the hell eh? I let it smolder and walked inside to ask if they had a fire extinguisher (just in case) and the attendant literally looked around for 5 minutes and then said "No". No!? YOU WORK AT A GAS STATION FOR CHRIST'S SAKE. I walked outside and found the extinguisher behind some glass, decided not to break it. I walked back over to the car and the flame was out, it was simply smoking slowly now as it burned off what I thought was oil at first all over everything. Once things cooled down I did some looking around and found that it was power steering fluid. The level in the reservoir is now at "Cold Min"...while the car was hot. I turned the car on and moved the wheel and to no surprise power steering fluid shot everywhere and started more smoking... Alright so hmm. It seems like there are 2 problems here. One is my fault, I admit, I was running without the heatshield on. I've been doing this for the past year almost though without problems. The other is a design issue. The tubing beneath the powersteering tubing (on the 04 at least) has its own heatshielding; however, the powersteering tubing does not. It seems like it moved when I was backing up and turning and touched the turbo causing the plain rubber to melt and send fluid everywhere. Called AAA and within 40 minutes they were there and had the car on a flat bed. I had it towed back to my dad's where I'm gonna put the stock DP, MP and HS back on. Going to clean up the engine bay while I'm at it and get in touch with Scott (once again) and Neil and see about warranty claims. I'm quite annoyed with this problem and just... UPDATE: New pictures... And my favorite, I was able to pull the line up and over one of the studs for the turbo... Some money shots...
If you want help wrenching, let me know. I hope it gets covered under warranty, but somehow I doubt it with a removed shield....
yea well we will hope for the best..im sure we couls replace the power steering line ourselves if want
On Tuesday, SoG flat out denied it claiming the HS had cut the tubing. Immediately, I objected and today I showed the tubing to Scott as well as Alex and John. It was unanimous--it is obvious that the tubing is melted. There was a lot of back and forth chat but finally, SoG worked with me to fix the car. Once again, thank you SS and SoG for lending me a helping hand :bigthumb:
I'm sorry, but what does HS mean? Why take off the heat shield (does that was HS means? sorta doesn't make sence) Did the burning of the engine comparment damage anything else?
