So I'm over here at jason's house and we've got most of the tranny unbolted (his front dif finally took a dump). We are stuck on how to get the halfshafts out of the tranny. Some people have said that you can leave them in ...this was based on a clutch install on scoobymods. Any advice? I'm sure more questions will follow.

Use a mallet and a phillips head screwdriver and bang the spring pins out of the splines where the half shafts connect to the tranny. You have to have the front swaybar unbolted, and then you can pull the half shaft off of the tranny splines. Make sure you grease them back up when you are re-installing them. In the DIY main page, there is a sticky that contains the Subaru Service Manual. I used that for my clutch install and it was a great help. You will have to have new spring pins to re-install it also. You can probably get away with the old ones, but the manual recommends replacing them.

Also, I have a clutch install DIY. There are no pictures, but I could send them directly to your email.

nicad Yes I am a troll

is this for a 5MT? clemsonscooby talked about taking the axles out, but if you have an earlier 5MT with axle stubs you have to split the case and remove c-clips on the inner portion of the front diff.

this was an 03 5mt. We've got it all done now, the tranny went back in jason's car this past saturday without a hitch. New front and center diff thanks to Will (WJM). (THANKS PED for the tech support on the reinstall). We just tapped the pins out and off came the halfshafts. We did not have to take off the front sway bar. Not sure if this applies to all or some applications but we didn't have to, and had enough clearance to pull them over of the wheel hub. We took alot of pics of the places where it got a bit confusing or hard to "read" how to do it. I think jason will be posting them along with a guide on how to do this uninstall yourself.
