Ok, I have a 02 WRX with Tanabe springs only. Stoke struts, they could be the original ones for that. The car has ruffly 80k miles on it, I posted about noise in drive train section, but this could be strut issues. When I hit bums and shit driving the car I'm starting to get a popping sound coming from the front end, could this be struts, and if so. Would it be cheaper to get coil overs or keep my springs and get struts instead?? -William...
kyb stuts will be cheaper than coilovers, but then again, you will have more adjustability w/ a coilover system. is your car a daily driver and do you mind more noise? i dd mine, but have tein flex coilovers and the pillowball mounts in the rear are not quiet at all, but they sure help out on the autocross course.
You could certainly upgrade to the adjustable strut set that siegelracing is selling. I'd opt for new springs, with 80k miles everything is bound to be wearing out to some degree. 4-way adjustable spec-c ra struts + JDM sti pink springs would be an incredible setup
The easiest way to tell if your struts are broke is to take them off and compress the strut yourself. If the rebound is bad, as in really slow, then the strut is probably blown. It sounds like some of your bolts could be loose also. Check the top strut nuts (40ish ft./lbs.) and strut mount nuts (30ish ft./lbs.) at the top. Check your strut to knuckle mounts also (130 ft./lbs.). While your under there just look for loose stuff that could make the noise also. An adjustable strut is probably the best way to go for a light race use car, but mostly daily driver. Don't buy anything new, most of the suspension stuff is meant to last a while.
Well the springs only have about 5k on'em, but the struts could be original oem. I say that so noone gets the wrong idea on the miles. I drive the car everyday, so yeah, daily driver, but I do get out once a week to drive through the country roads the next county over. I found a set of tien coil overs for about 8oo or so, sound good, are they good coilovers for that price??? It was merely about $$$ when I got those springs, really couldn't afford to get coilovers so opted for the tanabe's instead. I'll check that bolt tonight, thanks for the tip. -William...
found these and didn't know if anyone here knows or has heard of them? KYB AGX Adjustable Struts for WRX. Set of 4. KYB AGX shock absorbers allow easy adjustment of the shock damping rate to tune the vehicle’s performance to meet the needs of the street, strip or track. KYB AGX Adjustable Gas shock absorbers are externally adjustable, so there is no need to disconnect or remove anything to change settings. Depending on the vehicle’s configuration, the damping rate is selected with an external knob on the side of the shock body or through a screwdriver inserted into a slot at the top of the strut’s piston rod. The KYB AGX shock absorber’s single damping adjustment changes the shock’s compression and rebound resistance at once. set of 4 will run about $$569.oo +tax & shipping -William...
Get them from the ebay guy, its a lot cheapier. Or just get them used on the internet, they are meant to last a long time. If you find some with like 15-30k on them, they will still be good for at least another 100k. These are the struts that I use right now and I love them. I autox and daily drive on them all the time. No harshness, but nice and stiff for racing.
Ok, I'm not trying to be an ass or anything but who is the ebay guy. Or are you referring to the ebay site itself??? -William...
Don't forget that Siegel has some nice struts he's selling as well. http://www.wrxatlanta.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13024
Sorry about the misunderstanding. I just went to ebay.com and searched kyb agx wrx and this is what came up http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KYB-...013QQitemZ230125652969QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW. $360 for a set of 4, can't beat that for new struts. Other option, buy them used on a forum.
Thats a good deal there, less than 5oo with shipping. Might have to think about that for the day, and buy something :wiggle:... -William... Thanks for the link
Yeah, would be nice to find a few miles here in town that could accommodate a peaceful trip without running over any bums. There not big tho, speed bums and pot holes ranging about 2~3" deep. And I slow down when going through them, but the sound of something making noise is bugging the shit out of me. -William...
