So i blew my tranny out about 3 weeks ago. Im currently in the process of pulling it out. While wrenching away i noticed that the boot of my steering rack on the passenger side is ripped. there is some grease and build up but doesnt appear to be leaking. what would be the fix for this a new rack or boot? Im also looking for a 5speed with low miles. thanks guys!

  2. I havent done it with a Subaru, but when I had my 240 I had a tear in the boot and it was all gum'ed up. Clean it off the best you can and grease it back up if necessary. The only time you should need to replace the rack is if you have a knock or click going on. Similar to this.

FYI, if you see fluid coming out of the boot, replace the rack. Means you got a piston leaking in the assembly.

Let's confirm for argument's sake: Are you sure you do not mean the boots on the axles?

my steering rack boot has a nice hole in it as well. King said it's really nothing to worry about until you start hearing popping just like Clint said

alright cool, well i guess i need to replace the axle with the ripped boot first to see if the rack is popping.
