    STI shortblock!! DONE!!

I guess this is an update from an earlier thread, but this morning I bought an RPS six puck sprung-hub clutch from topspeed! Monday i will be swinging by SOG and picking up an STI shortblock!! I should be taking everything apart by the end of this week!

I have a question...I wanna replace valve cover gaskets, cam seals, pan gasket, and front and rear main seals. What else should i take care of while the engine is out of the car??

Sounds good. I dont know what else you should get for the swap, sounds like you've got it covered.

Have you done the tranny cocktail yet? Maybe a lower temp rating thermostat for the radiator since I'm sure the extra displacement wouldnt mind extra cooling.

Good luck on your swap. :)

A little history on mine for reference:

I was a cheapskate on my swap and used the stock 2.5rs head gaskets and wrx head bolts. Total cost to me was $100. No problems running 24psi so far. The stuff I didn't cut corners on was the oil pump and water pump. I replaced them since I had everything apart and they already had 50k miles on them. I used the ej22t oil pump because it allegedly runs higher oil pressure. I would also suggest getting a new timing belt tensioner.

Drop me a pm if you have any questions. Always happy to help.

Don't forget to port your TGV's while you have them off.

    Cool thanks man!!

Yea, its going well. Tonight after work, we pulled the motor out, removed the exhaust manifold and then the heads. Then we installed the ARP studs and then got one of the heads back on before calling it a day! Tomorrow i get paid and im gonna prolly get the engine rebuild kit for all the seals and everything. And hopefully tomorrow my clutch will come in too!!

I will keep you guys updated!

Got my rebuild kit and timing belt yesterday at lunch. I got paid yesterday morning and managed to keep my paycheck for about 12 hours before blowing it all on parts, LOL!! Also got my flywheel resurfaced!

After last night the engine is completely reassembled along with most of the accessories, exhaust manifold, and turbo!! She will be going in tonight after work (if UPS decides to bring me my clutch) and hopefully i will hear some noise coming out of the exhaust once again before i leave!!

Well, after 2 weeks waiting for my clutch to come in (long story) we finally got back to it and fought the engine into place tonight after work. I demolished my upstream o2 in the process tho, so ill have to get another one tomorrow. Ill update again soon im so exhausted!

Grats man! I am sure this is going to be all worth it when it fires up for the first time! Maybe when my car is paid down more this will be a project I tackle as well....or maybe the 07 engine swap....

I grabbed the new o2s from SoG today at lunch! My dealership will be closed tomorrow, which really sucks! So i hope to finish it up monday night after work!!

Oh yeah man!! I cant wait to drive it again!

The STI block has an additional crankcase ventilation port at the rear near the bell-housing. I went to Advance yesterday to get some hose to fit it and a couple of tee's. They didnt have anything that large tho..

So has anyone else run into this?? I figured i'd be better off just buying the factory piece from SoG for an STI and it should work just fine. And if nothing else ill just go to home depot to find something that will work (but im pretty anti-ghetto, lol). I know a couple of you guys have done this swap, I was just wondering what you guys did??

i have been running with mine capped off for 2 years and 25k miles with no issues. If I ever have the intake manifold of again I'll T' it in. Not sure it's worth the hassle if everything is back together.

Well the subie is running once again!! I got it running monday night around 9 oclock!! Scott gave it a break-in tune yesterday evening! It pulls like a beast and its only on 12psi right now!!

Thanks to Arnold for helping me with all the work and thanks to Scott Siegel for tuning it on his vacation!!!

Id say the shortblock and everything necessary to put it in costs around 2 grand. Labor costs more of course if you go that route. Also save some room for error, I destroyed my front o2 sensor while dropping the motor back in. BTW, youll need injectors if you want to run some higher boost. I am at 12psi right now for break-in and I cant go very much higher without bigger injectors.

considering the (tuned)wtq gains alone, that's quite a good cost/perf ratio.

i saw this on subaruxtras http://www.subaruxtras.com/SearchResult.aspx?KeyWords=shortblock

so jonny, are you able to sell or part out your origial bottom end? i'm wondering how much recoup you can get. i'm guessing not much.

is there a DIY guide coming out?
