would it help me achieve that 'feeling' i want if i replace my rack with a sti one? also which one would fit on my car? would it be hard to install?
would the steering rack mod be worth it over getting new springs and front sway bar on my current rack? i think someone at SOG mentioned that i have a bad rack.
It's not a common mod, but it would definitely help. Personally, I think money is best spent elsewhere, unless you've done just about everything else suspension wise. Also, unless you can get one real cheap, I would just save up the money for a quicker ratio steering rack.
where can i get those quicker ratio steering rack? i really want one.. that would make my car steering feel real heavy right?
I know revlab used to make them, but for some reason I dont think they do anymore. Crucial Racing used to make them too, but as far as I know they quit. You may be able to find one used too. Talk to Kevin (SkullWRX), I think he's got a crucial rack that he likes a lot. Then there is this company:http://www.rocketrally.com/managed/mod-CMpro-viewpage-pageid-5.phtml Which should be $1200-$1300 You could also try a steering quickener, but I dont know too much about them: http://www.howeracing.com/Steering/Index-Quickener-Quickener.htm Now only the '04 STi steering rack will bolt up, the 05+ wont. WRX ratio - 16.5:1 STi ratio - 15:1 05+ wrx ratio - 15.2:1 Spec C ratio - 13:1 EVO ratio - 13:1 Most aftermarket ratios will be 12.5:1 or 11.5:1, anything quicker will make you fly off the road when you sneeze. Another option is to get a smaller steering wheel. This will essentially accomplish the same thing you want, but it probably wont give the heavier feel to it.
what are some signs of a rack gone bad? my car is at a 90K miles, and my rack i think has gone bad..there is soo much lag in response, and almost NO center feel, and the car jumps left and right with the bumps on the road (although that might be my tires, but i's really bad..) i feel really unsafe driving it around, and it seems like the whiteline bushings didnt help me all the way. i hear good things about the quick steer racks, and also i heard that 04 sti rack will bolt right in my 03 bugeye (sedan). i think i should do this mod before i do anything else, and of course a proper alignment would help.
Ok I used to just think you were overreacting, but if you seriously don't feel safe driving down the road, I'm guessing something is definitely wrong. If in fact your steering rack is toast, then you should most deifnitely get a new one. I know you did this sort of (I think), but maybe you should meet up with someone who also drives an unmodded (suspension wise) 03 and drive eachother's cars to get feedback from both cars and drivers. That should tell you if something is in fact wrong or if you just have the jimmy-arms when driving. I'd probably be willing to do this with you some weekend (I also drive an 03 with stock suspension minus tires).
Hey, here is the quicksteer column for our bugeyes. http://column.landefabrication.com/ Prices and instructions should be on there.
the product looks great, but it says off-road use only, and my car is a daily drive. it looks like they dont recommend it on the highway...
Eh, a lot of aftermarket parts are for "offroad only." Maybe they actually mean it in this case, but usually it's just so the blame can't come back to them if you get in trouble with the 5-0. For instance, technically, every aftermarket downpipe and uppipe are because they remove cats. A lot of aftermarket headlights are too because the companies don't bother to get them DOT approved. This could be the case with the rack too. Although it may actually just be nuts
I agree with Dewey. DOT certification is supposedly an expensive process, and 90% of the parts we put on our car are not DOT approved (at least 90% of the part I put on my car). The above column is supposed to be an exact duplicate to the quicksteer column from crucial racing which was reviewed here: http://www.wrxatlanta.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2615
Yeah, I wouldn't be too worried about the "off-road use only" thing. I didn't click the link, but I imagine the quick steer unit would be similar to an Evo's steering ratio, which is very daily driver friendly. mockinbird... the way that hot wire was open in your trunk, I really wouldn't hesitate to look everything over REAL good in regards to your suspension. It may have been wrecked before you bought the car, or something along those lines.
yea, from the way it drives, i wouldnt be surprised either...however, besides from handling, it definitely hauls @$$ with just few mods hahaha..and it`s still embarassing that i let my car run with the wire heh..
