Strapping down subs in trunk

I just the subs from my previous car in my STi. My integra's carpet wouldn't move around and would hold my box still for the most part but that is not the case in our WRX's. It was really nerve racking knowing that my box was flying around in my trunk during spirited driving so I had to come up with a solution. I also wanted to be able to quickly remove the box without having much or anything left behind blocking access to my trunk. I thought about a few things but this is what seemed would work the best and as it turns out works great!

Luckily there are little holes all over the trunk covered with circular black tape. If you simply lift up the carpet and peel off the tape covering the holes to the left and right of where your box would sit (or my box as in the pictures) you reveal two fairly large holes that are big enough to hook tie down straps through each one.

    Things you will need:
    1) Tie down strap (home depot ~$13) - Make sure to get the kind with rubber covered hooks on either side.
    2) Drawer handles or something to run the strap through on your box so it doesn't get away (home depot ~$2) - It shouldn't matter what color, you can paint these later.

The pics should be self explanitory. Let me know if you have any questions!

Make sure you get a small enough strap (the rachet part) so that you can tighten it while its between your box and the side of your trunk.

I put the loops (drawer handles) on the side so they wouldn't hit the top of the trunk. I put small slits in the carpet so i could put the hooks through and not have to pull the sides of the carpet up.

And here is the finished product. Clean, tidey, and DOESN'T MOVE AN INCH!! :)

Many thanks to my friend Mike for donating brain power to the operation!! :)

    This thread sucks!

Just kidding. :D That actually looks like a slightly better idea than velcro espceially for a gi-normous box like that one. For some reason I had a smaller one pictured in my mind.

I could have swore I already replied to this.....

I have used this setup for 2 years. Works great for track days and auto-x.

The hooks lock into the two seat bars.

Thanks man! And thanks for all the coments! The box IS pretty large. I actually tried the bungie thing for a few days but it didn't work at all seing as how large my box is. I also have the amp mounted on the back which makes it even heavier...

I also have to say, out of all the stereo installs i've done, this one was CRAZY easy! only two screws to remove the console, then 6 more for the radio! thats awesome!!! :)

That looks awesome! I need to get some banana clips like yours. Make it much easier and faster... Since i have the amp mounted to the back of thte box tho for now i prob. don't need them yet... :coolugh:

I will take a picture of my setup, bungee cords definately are a life saver.

  11. 06 wrx's come with much thicker trunk carpet/mat. I wonder if that will help since in my car, the box itself doesn't move around but the carpet/mat that's sliding...

    Nice write up though ;)

Yea, I mounted my amp under the seat so the box would be easier to remove.

Thanks! To a certain extent I think that will help... You might try putting velcro under the carpet to keep it in place if they haven't arleady don that on the new ones...If you're going to be doing some pretty spirited driving i wouldn't trust the carpet tho :p.

Ive got my box against the jack side of the trunk, my box is pretty small (.50 cubic) so its perfect right there. Box is prob 6" deep, 24" long and 8" tall.

  15. Alex you too? haha I'm surprised by how many people on here have sound system on their cars. ;)
