Does anyone have some opinions on shocks/struts for the WRX? I have been looking at the KYB AGX, but was hoping for something a little more inexpensive. The best price I have seen on the KYB AGX is around 479. There is a set of Koni Yellows that are adjustable for 305 at www.horsepowerfreaks.com, but I don't how good they will perform. These will be used for autox, so they probably need to be adjustable. I don't want to have a really stiff ride everyday. I am going to a much wider tire, and I need to ensure that I will not rub the top of the tire during cornering. Thanks for the help/suggestions.
The koni inserts are great. You could also try to source out a stock sti strut assembly. This would improve your ride quality and handling performance substantially.
Is the STi strut assembly adjustable? I am really concerned that it just won't be stiff enough for autox. Anybody know what a decent price for a used STi strut?
A guy is selling STi JDM V7 struts plus tophats for 400 with 10k on them at ClubWRX. This to me sounds a little pricey since brand new struts could be purchased for less than that in the Koni's and 100 more for the KYB's. Am I wrong, or does that sound about right?
I was looking into the agx's too but after reading some reviews on nasioc i changed my mind... some people were saying that the agx's were either too soft or too firm(not enough adjustability)... so i researched thre tokico D-specs. they are 16 way adjustable and suposed to be good quality(also read reviews on nasioc).. I got mine off ebay for $550 shipped. I havent got them installed yet. but i will be in the next couple of weekends(whenever i can get home). I will definetly write a review once i get them installed ps. Tom once i get them installed you can defiently take a ride in my car at one of the auto-x's
I also researched the Tokico's and that is the way I'm going. but only the D-specs by Tokico, nothing else they make is worth it.
Keep in mind that if you switch out the rear tophats for 04+ tophats you can run any 04+ springs and struts also, which really opens up your options (at least for us wagon folks). I'm bouncing back and forth between 04+ Espelir GT springs or 04+ Sti Prodrive springs, and Koni adjustables or STI takeoff struts. Probably gonna go with the STI struts in time since they'll be cheaper.
I think I am going to go with the Koni's. The Tokico's are a little more than what I wanted to spend. Hopefully, gotsol has some kind of deal with the devil on the Koni setup. Thanks for the help though...
dude, I just looked up your deal and horsepowerfreaks and they are Koni Red's non adjustables. I am talking about yellow adjustables. there is a big difference
Does anyone know what struts from a wagon will fit and work on a sedan? I am guessing the rears might be a little different, but the fronts should be the same right?
The rears are different. Springs are longer to put up with more load in the rear, as well as the top hats are different. Ive neveronce heard for someone going from wagon to sedan, its generally the other way around.
I've heard varying things over on NASIOC. There are a couple of guys over there with bugeye wagons running 04+ springs and 04 struts. You need new rear tophats to fit the 04 springs. The rear sedan struts (in one case ver8 STI struts) fit with an even 1.5 degrees of camber(according to Arnie who just installed a set on a friend's 02). In the front, sedan struts make negative camber hard to achieve so you have to use an extra set of camber bolts. One guy actually used Koni adjustables made for 04 struts on his 02 struts and everything fit perfectly. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=919547 One of the suspension gurus was even talking about using wagon struts on a sedan to get massive negative camber . . .
I found this guy on NASIOC that is getting rid of his KYB AGX's that have 15k on them. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=925932. I know these should be good for a while, but is it even worth it since its from a wagon and they are at least a year used?
IMO you should just save an extra couple of months and have some options on what you can afford. That way if you buy the cheaper option you can always buy more parts.
