had a chance to look at the new legacy 6MT that will be standard on them? apparently it's a modified 5MT split case design, and it's a fucking cable shifter. let's go backwards in transmission design! LOL. good fucking job subaru you idiots
Looks lighter. But if its based on the 5MT it'll be as weak as the 5MT. There's not enough room in there to fit the gears. They probably had to make them even thinner to fit 6th.
5MT case. Cable shifters. Same outter size as the normal 5MT. I call it the "5.5MT". *out of order!! lol. This is actually the first post but thats ok. *
Subaru is getting cheaper!??? They were always cheap, especially the WRX. The semi closed deck 2.5 + 6sp was about the only endearing setup left. Oh well:unamused:
i don't see what people are complaining about... If you get at least as much reliability as the 5mt, and you get an extra gear, isn't this an improvement? Or is this indignation that they aren't just using the STI 6mt in everything? $$$
generally, auto makers try to improve their products. cramming an extra gear into a 5MT case and making it cable shifted is a step backwards in every regard. it's just a cheap way to advertise "ZOMG 6 SPEED" and putting subpar crap in the car. don't know for sure if the transmission will suck, but no one has any reason to believe otherwise. it basically tells me they don't give a shit about performance enthusiasts anymore and just trying to compete with Acura and the like
well, from the history i've read on the 5mt, it was a hack job of an earlier 4mt to begin with, also. But they stuck with it for 15 years. and again, if they make a product that maintains the status quo, and adds a feature, isnt that a better product? I just get the feeling people are like "Man, this beer is mediocre. Even the can is hard to open." "Guess what? They made a better can top for this beer, and it won't spill either!" "Oh god, thats even worse because the beer is still bland." huh?
you lost me.... I think people are realizing that by Subaru putting 6 gears inside of the 5 speed transfer case, Subaru is sacrificing the strength that the STI 6 speed is known for. Much like the Evo's. Their 5 speed tranny is actually stronger than the 6 speed found in the MR (their higher model) because they just stuck a 6th gear inside of the 5 speed case.
Okay, as WJM can tell you, the 5MT is hacked together already. When I took the transmission technical trainning at SOA I couldn't believe how many shims you had to add to stack up the slack on the main shaft.
Yes from what I hear the case is the main weakness. Overall I think this is just weaksauce. The STI 6sp is legendary for its strength. I bet used market prices are going to skyrocket for the 6mt if this rumor ends up being true.
